What Do You Really Believe?

We are continuing to work on the abstract to prepare us for the "This I Believe" essay.  Read through the statements below, pick the one you feel the strongest about (agreement or disagreement), and write about this belief for 10 minutes.

  • Life is fair.
  • Miracles do happen.
  • What goes around comes around.
  • People learn from their mistakes.
  • If you smile long enough you become happy.

  1. I truly disagree with the statement that life is fair. You hear it from your parents all the time, you want to go to some event that your sibling is going to and your parents won't let you. You say, that isn't fair! Then they say life isn't fair. I find that statement to be true because you can be an loving, caring, and giving person but never really get what you deserve. There are people who can be absolutely terrible people, committing crimes every week and just get away with it getting so lucky and even when they do get away with stuff they do it again because they think bad things won't happen. Life isn't fair, you have to play with the cards your dealt in life.

    1. Some good thoughts. Yes, it is a saying that many parents use. I think you're correct with some of your examples.

  2. I do believe that people learn from there mistakes because if you do something wrong once you wont do it again because you either don't want too get in trouble or you don't want to make a bad mistake twice. For instance if you have your phone out in class and it gets taken away you wont have your phone in class anymore because you don't want it to be taken from you again.

    1. You seem to have a baseline understanding. I'd like you to push yourself more in the future. Really think about how people learn from their mistakes (more than one example) and go further with why you believe this.

  3. I truly believe that what goes around does comes back around. I know that there have been situations where someone said something about someone else and then in the future they get something said about them and they are like, "Why did this happen to me?" Well, karma does come around. It may take 1 day or 1 year. You just never know but it does happen. But karma isn't always bad. Theres also good karma. For instance, there have been stories about people who donate money to charities and then after a few months they come home to find flowers on their front porch or a thank you letter. What goes around comes back around weather it's for the best or the worst, eventually karma will hit.

  4. I truly believe that people learn from their mistakes. If someone was working and they were on their phone constantly the boss would probably fire them. So then at their next job they wouldn't be on their phone constantly, because they wouldn't want to loose their job again. If someone was walking one night and tried to pet a skunk they saw, they would probably get sprayed by the skunk. So then on the next nightly walk they see the skunk again and they avoid the animal, so they don't get sprayed. If someone saw a bees nest and tried to take the honey from it well the bees would attack the protect their honey. So the next time they see the nest they don't try to take the honey, so they don't get stung again.

  5. I truly believe that people do learn from their mistakes. My dad and I have to breed heifers over at our other farm almost every day. If there is a tame one or a nosy one, we will run it behind a gate in their pen rather than run the heifer through the shoot. 1012 was a nosy one, so we just ran her behind the gate. She turned really crazy and kept on jumping the gate or backing out when we couldn't stop her. Dad was getting really mad because she kept on getting away and running through me. We ended up having to run her through the shoot to breed her. After that, I will never let Dad run them behind a gate.

  6. I totally believe that people do learn form their mistakes. If you get everything right then you would not get to know different ways. Like in math if you get one wrong then the teacher will probably teach you a different way to do the equation then you may become smarter. The great Bejerman Franklin had made mistakes when making the light bulb and he learned that this way and that way did not work so he made it until the bulb was created.

  7. People learn from there mistakes because you have to fail at something in order to accomplish it. If you study for a test and fail it you study a little harder next time and learn why you made them mistakes the first time and improve on what you missed. If the teachers wanted you to to get it all right they would make it super easy but they want you to try and learn.

  8. I truly believe that people can learn from their mistakes. Because when I was younger and I would be rude to someone my parents would put me in time out, and after a bit I started to learn that you have to be nice to everyone you met, even if you aren't the biggest fan of them. Also when we were training our dogs not to bite after a while of telling them "no" they finally stopped bitting. Or like on homework when you would make a mistake and get that question wrong the teacher might go over it and then hopefully you will realize what you did wrong so you won't make that same mistake on your next assignment or the test. So yes I do believe that people do learn from their mistakes.

  9. I believe that what comes around goes around because if you hurt someone by calling them names or maybe physically hurting them, then karma will come back. I believe this because when you see on the news that someone did something wrong, like people who rob banks or assault people, they get caught and most of the time they get charged for it. Also, like Osamo bin laden, the man who came up with the plan to hit the twin towers with planes, was killed by the navy seals team. He had gotten away for a long time but eventually he was caught and karma did get him. It is like Adolf Hitler, who killed thousands of jewish people, was also killed, even though no one actually killed him, he committed suicide to escape capture. So he also had karma catch up to him. So these are some examples of why i believe that whats comes around goes around and i believe it can impact you very small and also very big.

  10. I believe that people learn from their mistakes because I have watched videos on youtube about teenagers driving while drunk, the driver while intoxicated made the decision to drive ended up killing one or more people and the driver is scared and many things are running through their head, and he/she knows that they will go to jail, the driver hopefully won't drive and drink again because every day they have to live with the guilt that they had killed with someone.

  11. I truly disagree that if you smile long enough you will become happy, when I tried it my mouth mussels just got tired and started to hurt which actually made me more mad then before. It also depends on your setting, for me it didn't work at school but it could work in more happy and fun environments. Therefore if you smile for a long time you get more mad rather then happy. You can try this yourself and you may get different results but I'm just sharing what happened when I tried it.

  12. People learn from their mistakes.
I disagree because people will make mistakes and it could strongly hurt you in life. They could be your best friend and then make a mistake that could change your life. If they make that mistake once and they apologize you might give them another chance because you think that they won't do it again. They have learned from there experience. Well they do it again and again and again, until you just can't take it anymore. Sometimes mistakes are to big to fix and that person doesn't want to fix it even if they could. If a person makes a mistake once I believe that they will do it more then once. They don't learn, because they wouldn't keep doing it over and over and over again!!! Lots of people do some mistakes and some are easy to fix, but just because they fixed the problem doesn't mean they learned from it.

  13. I truly believe that life isn't fair. Some examples for why i believe this is because some people have to work to earn something while other are just given it. For some people school comes easier than it does for others. Like some people don't have to study for a test and they get 100% on while the people who study for hours get 98%. Those are just some of the reasons why i think life isn't fair.

  14. I disagree that people learn from their mistakes. The four western Dubuque boys wouldn't have died if the Wilwart boy would have learned from his mistake before that when he rolled his four wheeler and almost died. Also like robbers or people that go to jail or prison for a crime get out of prison or jail, will do the same thing over and then have to spend more time in jail or prison and then do it all over again. Some people just never learn from their mistakes.

  15. Life is Fair
-I do not believe that life is fair everyone has their ups and downs. Nobody knows what the future holds. Everyone has different amounts of challenges or easy experiences. You just have to go with what life throws at you. Just because something is going bad or not the way you expected, you have to live every moment you have cause you never know when it will be gone. So even though life isn't fair that doesn't mean that you have to sit around and feel sorry for yourself be strong. No storm last forever.

I meen if I make a hundred million dollars a year I would consider myself to have a pretty fair life. People that are homeless don't even make enough to pay for food or water sometimes. Life is just full of challenges. Some people work all their lives and never get anywhere. You never know what might happen in the future.

  17. I disagree that people learn from their mistakes. I know a man who got caught drinking and driving three different times and each time got his license taken away. He recently got it back and he just got another one last week. If I got my license taken away once because of drinking and driving I wouldn't do it again, he keeps choosing to make those decisions though. Also with people who go to jail. Some people go to jail, because they did something. Then they finally get out, but some are only out for a few weeks because then they go right back to jail for doing the same thing. People also don't learn from their mistakes from past relationships. They trust their friends, then they get mad or hurt because that friend betrayed them. But then in a couple more weeks they go right back to them but end up getting hurt or betrayed once more time. Very few people learn from their mistakes, but I believe most people don't.

  18. I disagree that if you smile long enough you will become happy because if you just put on a happy face and let all your emotions bubble up inside of you sooner or later you will blow your top, and people would wounder why because you never let anyone see you having a bad day. Life is not always great and everyone has bad days so just talk to someone. You don't have to tell the whole world but its not good to let it stay inside you either. Find one person who you can talk to, it doesn't matter if is a friend, family member, or even a pet, all you have to do is know that they are there for you and will help you. So don't just put on a happy face and think you will become happy if you fake it long enough. -Hannah

  20. I agree that people learn from there mistakes. If you did something and you did it wrong then the next time you will know to do it right or from the experience of doing it wrong you will learn on how to do it right. Some people make the same mistakes over and over again and never learn to do it right. When I thought of "do people learn from there mistakes?" I thought of it as like when you do a math problem. If you did the problem wrong the first time then maybe next time you will try a different method.

  21. I believe that people cant learn from their mistakes because a lot of times people do things over and over again, like if they get caught by the police TPing, they still do it next year. 22. I believe if you smile long enough you will become happy because its actually proven that the more that you smile it makes you feel better, makes your immune system stronger too. Smiling is also contagous. When you smile, a real or fake one, someone is surly going to smile back. I don't know about you, but knowing that I made someone happy, and smile. I would be happy myself. Smiling goes a long way to people that are down or cant do to much anymore. If you ever get to go to a nursing home of some sort, just smile. The elders living there don't get much company when they're there. So even if your going to see your grandparents, aunt or uncle, smilie to some other residents there. They usually will smile back. All this world needs is to smile. Even if you are with a fake smile usually someone or even something can come around and make it real. Smiling is a way to show your happy, even when your not.

  27. I truly believe people do learn from their mistakes. If you make a mistake in a homework assignment, you can correct it and learn from that mistake when you take a test or do another assignment. If you treat someone unfairly, you can see that it hurt the person and then you can learn not to treat someone like that. You can learn from your mistakes in sports when you mess something up or do something wrong you can learn from that and then preform to the best of your abilities. If you are learning something new you won't always get it right the first time, but you will learn from your past mistakes to get it right. If you feel a certain way towards something that you don't like to feel, learn from why you are feeling that way so you don't feel like that anymore. Edison did not invent the lightbulb the first time he tried it. He made multiple mistakes and failed many times. However, he learned from his mistakes and never gave up and eventually he created the lightbulb. Everyone makes mistakes and its okay if you make mistakes. Just remember to learn from them and move on to do it right.

When you have a mad face on you look at everything will seem like that it is trying to bring you down. if you have a happy face on then you will look at everything like it is trying to make you joyful. If you stay happy others around you will want to be around you and will stay happy with you, but if you say angry everyone around you will stay away from you and maybe you will make them angry too. Leadership shows parents, teachers, coaches, etc about how much you care about something and how hard your willing to work for that goal or thing. Having leadership gives people an inside look on your life and yourself as a person. My mom and stepdad taught me this and I want to show them that I can be a leader and be successful in my life, sports, and schooling. Leadership is all about taking charge in a certain activity or problem in your life such as a team captain on a football team, where he takes charge and lets everybody know whats going on and what their goal is.

Everybody gets set in their position and then the flashes go off. One by one everybody get a picture and it seems like youve been standing there for about ten minutes. Then somebody decides to say "Are we done yet?" or "My mouth is hurting" and the group starts laughing and just then someone takes a picture and you have the best picture out of all that were taken because you were laughing and having a good time. In sports, there are a lot of politics, just because you have the right "name" or your parents are friends with the coaches, doesn't mean that you should get more playing time or a better chance to play. Some people work very hard to get where they want to be, and for some people it just comes naturally, or they have a lot of things handed to them and do not have to work very hard at all for anything that they want. I believe that life is unfair. life is not fair because everyone does different things. Everyones not the same and therefore they need to do different things, that may not be fair. People will stop and get mad but life goes on. A family may only bring 2 of there 5 children to the waterpark. The 2 may have earned it or are going just for fun. The other 3 may be upset but they just have to go with the flow because people always say life goes on. For example people who get cancer, thats totally not fair to them. They didn't deserve that but it just happens. I believe everything happens for a reason. Some reasons may not be good but some may be. But things aren't fair so you just have to live your life on and not be sad or down. You only have 1 life, so live it to your fullest.

  37. I believe that what goes around comes around...
If you do something to someone that you deep down know is wrong to someone, there is a very good chance that that will come back at you later and affect you probably in a negative way. If you cheat on a test in school and get caught then that will come back at you and you may get a zero as a grade or some sort of punishment. When you do something wrong it goes around as you did a bad thing and then comes back around at you and punishes you in some way. Karma is something that is imaginary, and what goes around comes around goes hand and hand with that. If you hurt someone, Karma kicks in and will come back and affect you back in some way. Those things show that what goes around comes around. Basically be a good person and you'll never have to worry about things coming back to you.

  38. I truly believe that miracles do not exist. Miracle is just a word that I think believes that something happened when the chances were almost none. There is always a very slim chance that some one is run over by a semi and lives. If that person is you great, but that doesn't make it a miracle. No matter the senario something can always happen for better or worse, it is what makes life what it is. The possibility of something happening or not is always there and I think miracle just describes a possibility that was uncalculated or people thought would never happen.

  40. Is Life Fair?
I truly believe that life is not fair. There will be ups and downs, you might not get your way, and you might feel like you have bad luck. Life will never be fair. Not everything is going to go your own way. That is just the way of life, not everything is your way. For example if life was always your way, you would be perfect, but nobody is perfect. You can try to do your best or strive for greatness but no matter what, things will not be fair along the way. So when life isn't going well, you have to stand up. You have to get back up because that is life. Its going to knock you down, but it is your decision to get right back up, because life isn't fair.

    1. You have great ideas... challenge yourself next time to include specific examples (people who've not received what they should though they try.)

  41. I strongly believe that people learn from their mistakes. A lot of people take every little obstacle in life as a sign. They believe that because one kid got hurt playing a game in P.E, that P.E shouldn't be allowed at school or that it's the teacher's fault. How about the fact that the kid possibly wasn't listening to rules or they were goofing off? Not everything is a sign but more of an eye- opener as to what we need to be more cautious about. The pizza was burnt at lunch but that doesn't mean we should fire the cooks! That doesn't mean we should start a petition against the food at the school! It means that one mistake was made and I bet the cooks learned from it. I bet some people look at it as 'hey, everybody makes mistakes!' We learn from the mistakes we make every day! You step in a puddle and your shoes and socks get soaked! I bet you won't be stepping in puddles anymore!

    1. Definitely you have a very strong opinion about this statement. So, did the people learn from their mistakes in every scenario?

  42. I truly disagree that smiling long enough will make you happy. I think that you could be trying to put on a show so no one will ask you whats wrong, because sharing feelings may be hard for some people. The more you go along smiling and putting on the show the more you may start getting more and more depressed or upset, because deep down you want someone to see that on the inside you aren't really happy and that on the inside your not smiling, you could be crying or frowning. Maybe you're smiling on the outside so you show the people around you that you are strong. Or maybe you need to be strong for someone. You don't want them to see you breaking down. Just because you are smiling on the outside doesn't mean you're truly happy.

    1. You have a very good start here. Maybe even think about a real life example or discussing something you saw on tv or read in the newspapers or magazines.

  43. I believe that people don't learn from their mistakes. I know a lot of people that don't learn from their mistakes. An example is smoking and drinking. People don't learn from that mistake the just get addicted and keep dong it. Some people can learn from their mistakes but a lot of people don't.

  45. I truly disagree that if you smile long enough that you will become happy because some people just smile so that people will ask them whats wrong a million times. Smiling long enough won't always make you happy because if you get asked what's wrong it gets hard for people to share what they are feeling. The longer you pretend to be happy, the more gross you feel inside, the more depressed or upset you start to feel. Some people are actually crying or frowning inside because they aren't happy with themselves or other people. I know that is for me because it is sometimes hard to smile and be happy. I have negative feelings too. Some people don't always have to be happy or have to smile but they feel that they have to put on a show for everybody.

  46. Life isn't fair because people starve everyday and die because of it. Other people throw millions of pounds of food everyday and those people that starve do not deserve this but they have to live with not knowing if they will eat today or not.

  47. I highly believe that you can learn from your mistakes. Because if you make a mistake, you can see what your doing wrong, than you can learn how to easily fix it. Not only can you learn from making mistake yourself, you can also learn from seeing other people making mistakes. I have made many mistakes in my life, but I have learned from those mistakes. And I think I have become a better person from that. But I have also seen many people close to me make mistakes. And because of that, I have learned what to do, and what not to do. If you do not know what things are wrong, than your not going to know what things are right.

  48. I think people do learn from there mistakes because when I was younger I crashed my ranger into a big grain bin that was full of corn. I was driving to fast and I lost control and I was going like 45 mph. The ranger turned really hard and went head on in to the bin. I was ejected from the ranger I flew through the air and hit the grain bin and I got knocked out. When I woke up my back hurt really bad. My dad was driving back in from the hay field because we were doing hay. My dad stopped and ran over to the ranger to see if I was okay. Then he asked what happened and I told him what happened. he got mad and told me don't drive like that because you can kill yourself driving like that. I learned from this mistake not to drive fast.

  49. I believe that people learn from there mistakes, because life never stops teaching and we as people never stop learning. Such as when you have that, ah ha, moment, when you find out how to do something. Like when you are a little kid and is learning how to ride a bike, you try and then you fall off. Later you might try again and you failed. So you keep trying to ride your bike. You even learn on the subconscious level and you don't even know about it. This is what I believe.

    1. I really need more information. Really prove that people learn from their mistakes. Give examples from your life, from something you've seen, or something you've read.

  52. I believe that people learn from there mistakes. I believe that ones you get the wrong answer you can ask for help and get the correct answer, it will help you with every other question that is like that answer. Once you do something wrong or get in trouble by your parents or an older person, you should know you shouldn't do it again. It's like you learn your lesson and learn from it. It's like the same thing as making a mistake.
