Think about the article you read as well as the articles your peers discussed with you. Write a reflection discussing how the information you've gained from what you read and what you learned from your peers will be of value to you in your life.
I think that there should be more done about gun violence in Chicago. The problem is that there is no one that cares about what happens. Teachers should not be the ones that are encouraging their students to fight. I think that the teachers should be the first one to let the school board know about the fight. There are mare things that need to be done about bulling so the teens dont commit suicide. Women should not be forced into mariage, because that is not right to force anyone to do anything.
ReplyDeleteThese articles are all about something bad happening somewhere in the world that needs something to be done. They all have something about violence and death. People need to realize what is happening around them.
ReplyDeleteMy article is about all the gun violence in Chicago, and how children are the targets. Things that need to be done are reaching the children before they get sucked into this gang violence and regulating guns on a national level. There is so much violence all around, even in schools which makes kids not want to go to school due to all the possible danger.
Bullying is a cause of suicide and death, and possibly the reason for gangs, they want to be in control of something. Arranged marriages in Iraq are causing suicide because women want to be able to marry who they want, or religion is making problems for all.
These articles are all something important that people need to know and hear about. It relates to my life because bullying happens around me everyday and violence is near. We are not living in a perfect world and something needs to be done by all.
I think that there is a lot of violence around the world and many people are being hurt by this. We have kids committing suicide because they are being bullied or they are depressed. Teen suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens. Kids are also shooting and stabbing themselves because their parents pick who they want them to date and marry and sometimes they are related to them and they don't want to marry them because they think that is is wrong so they hurt themselves because of it. There is also a lot of gun violence going on and they are trying to ban some guns so there isn't so much violence and shootings. I think that this would be a good idea because then there would be less shootings and less suicides and people being killed. There are still some people that buy and sell guns illegally. Overall I think that there is to much violence and that we should start thinking of ways to stop it. And they should start showing kids who commit suicide on the news so then you can hear their story and then realize that there are better ways to heal your pain then to kill yourself.
ReplyDeleteThe articles I had the pleasure to hear about were really interesting to me. All of them had to do with violence between other kids. Two of the articles were about violence in Chicago. One point of view was how kids were fighting each other in and outside of school. It got to the point where they were putting vasciline on so they dont get scars or bruises. The other one was about gun violence in Chicago. Then they compared the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut and Chicago shootings. They are plenty more shooting in Chicago then of Connecticut, but they do not have anything on the news about it. The other articles were about teen suicide. One of the articles was about a girl named Amanda Todd and how she killed herself over bullying. They argued over whether or not to adress people about suicide because there are a lot more then we think. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause in youth death. The other suicide article was about forced marriage in Iraq. The kids are killing them selves because they are being forced by their parents to marry people they don't want to.
ReplyDeleteThis will help me value how many kids go threw suicide and we don't even know about it. I didn't know that there were a lot more kids commiting suicide because they don't announce it. Same with the violence in Chicago. There are a lot more then we think just because they don't say anything. Therefore, I need to be grateful for the good community we have and be aware of people who are being suicidal.
After reading these articles, i realized the world is a sad, sad place. Bad things are happening all over the world and we need to find a way to end them. After reading these articles i realized how good I have it and how bad the world is becoming. People need to get together to put an end to this stuff. I hope that people care enough to do so, otherwise it will only get worse and the world will be a scary place to live.

ReplyDeleteIn Philadelphia, there have been thousands of violent incidents that has been causing severe problems in the Philadelphia school districts. Students like Teshada Herring travel to school everyday, afraid for their lives. And the teachers have no control over the actions of their students simply because they're out of control. An average of 25 violent acts occur per day to students, staff, and teachers. I'm grateful that I can wake up in the morning and go to school without the fear of getting attacked, being attacked while trying to learn, and receiving numerous threats each and every day. Because of this, known and unknown teen suicides are occurring, just like the death of Amanda Todd. The media isn't sure if they should try to hide or show the current problems. They are afraid if they do, chain reaction suicides will occur.
Freedom is also a privilege that most people take for granted as well. I do not have to worry about growing up and being forced to marry someone I do not love or want to be with. Suicides are also occurring in Iraq because of forced marriages. However, Iraq is trying to cover these deaths up. These girls see what it's like outside of Iraq and forced marriages, they kill themselves.
After reading the articles, I realized there is a lot of things going on that I didn't know about. I knew about the shootings in Chicago because I've been there and seen Chicago. I've heard about arranged marriages in middle school but didn't know much about it. I think that is very weird and would definitely not like it. The one thing I never knew about was the gangs that are attacking schools. I would not want to go to school if this happened at Maq. Valley. That is why it's good to live in a small town. Also the teen suicides. I knew they happened but didn't know they happened that often. I think that is a big issue that needs to be solved.

Whether it's teen suicide, increased gun violence, violence at schools, or arranged marriage, important but overlooked news events are being increasingly talked about in media. Though they may not always be related to small town Iowa, connections can be made from friends living in the cities to movies we've seen.
ReplyDeleteTeen suicide has been on the rise since 1917 and yet the first person to enter the media because of bullying and suicide was in the last decade. Her name was Amanda Todd. It's thanks to her that people were forced to face the truth: that we need to talk about teen suicide.
Meanwhile, though it may not be a problem in the USA, young girls are being forced into arranged marriages and are self harming themselves because of it. These girls should get to marry whomever they would like. If they don't then the suicide rate within these girls will continue to increase.
Chicago is also struggling with a previously undiscussed topic. Gun violence is continuing to increase at a staggering rate. Over 2,000 shooting incidents happened in the last year. Chicago workers are trying to stop these increasing statistics.
Philadelphia is also having problems with school violence. Everyday kids and teachers in every corner of the district are being beaten up by groups of kids. Administrators are still denying that the fights are their fault or that they even need to change anything in the way they're running their schools.
Each of these articles have something in common: people have it harder than others and they're dying from their hardships. Though controversial and typically shadowed issues, these articles truly prove that things are not always good and that the authority needs to do something about it before it's too late. The authority figures can change these saddening statistics and help make people live happier lives. All they need to do is make a change.
People like me in the middle of Nowhere, Iowa can barely relate to the hardships that these people are facing. Violence at school? Psshh, bullying is dealt with all the time. Gun violence? Nope. Arranged marriage? Not even in this country. Teen suicide? People are helping their friends work through bad times. And yet, we can still relate at a much smaller level. We do have bullying, we are forced to do things we don't want to do, people are depressed at our school, and we do have some rebellious students. Maybe we'll never know exactly how those others feel. I hope we don't. I hope that our future will be a better place because events like these are being brought forward. They contain themes that we should carry with us. We shouldn't forget the hardship that others go through because someday, those hardships might be our own.
When I hear my peers talk to me about their articles it is unbelievable to hear the numbers being read off. The rising numbers of suicidal teens, and suicidal muslim women who want to find their own husband, and fall in love with their husband, not their fathers choice. Or you hear "a shooting in Chicago killed five young girls." Its hard to think, but when do you ever hear about that on the news? Never. But it probably happens every day. We just don't like to face the facts and understand that this world is not a safe place and we can help it become safer if we would just get the word out and warn people. You would never believe it, but even teachers see bullying going on in classrooms and do not always report it. It's sad to think we could be putting a stop to suicide and bullying, but yet we just wipe it off our shoulders like it is nothing.
ReplyDeleteI feel that there are people in this high school who have thought strongly about suicide maybe not always because of bullying but because they feel they don't belong in the world, or they are not happy. Many people think if someone commits suicide, they were bullied. No, there are so many other reasons. Bullying is just one of the highest factors of suicide. Sometimes I am happy that I live in a small town in Iowa, but then sometimes i feel I am not living my life to the fullest, you always see pictures of girls on the beach and the sun, and the water, and it all makes me jealous, but then I think of other girls in Chicago who do get all of that. They do also have that huge risk of getting kidnapped, shot, abused, etc. Yes, Chicago sounds like an amazing place to go, but a week would be enough for me, I would want to get back to Iowa, it's sad to say i know, but I really like not having to come to school everyday hoping this one kid doesn't bully me, or having to walk through the tracker for guns and weapons. I am glad that we have a school where we do to worry about it. Suicides is not the easy way out, and that people need to understand and get a better meaning of suicide and that the media should show suicide is not okay. I believe media should show it more, and show that it is not okay.
When we got put into groups to discuss our articles, I was curious to hear what their story was about. Some of the stories are just unbelievable to me. Courtney's story was about arranged marriage. Parents of teenage girls are picking out men for their daughter to marry. They may be 10 or even 20 years older then them. Stop and think for a minute. What would you think if your parents picked out a guy that was 27 and your 16 and you have to get married to him? A little awkward, right? Apparently the government doesn't care about their younger generations. Due to young girls getting married, they are not happy with their lives so they end up committing suicide. The young girls just want to be happy and live their lives and not be treated like crap!
ReplyDeleteIn Nate's article it was talking about Chicago. You probably think tall buildings, maybe an elegant city. But what you don't know is what happens to many kids every day. In Chicago their are a lot of gangs that are located all around the city. The gangs are killing little innocent children within their town. But do you ever hear the death of the kids on the news? No. In Connecticut when all the school children were shot, they were on the news. I don't think you need 20 kids killed to make it on the news. I think if people new what was happening in little towns and even big cities like Chicago, they would make think of a way to stop all the shooting. If more people knew about all these shootings that not only occur in the United States, but all over the world, maybe the gunmen's would be afraid to go out and it wouldn't lead to many school deaths. Just like in my story, a innocent girl was sitting in class when all of the sudden some classmates came in and beat her to death! Do we ever hear about that? No. I think people all over the country and even nation need to be aware of what is going on in their town. One day you might feel safe, but the next might be a mystery. All adults and even children should be on the lookout for something suspicious. NEVER hold anything back because you never know what is going to happen. Do things with confidence and be proud of who you are. Don't let anyone bring you down.
After Reading this article I believe that i learned a lot about why suicide is not in papers or news. Putting names and faces to the peoples articles that have commit suicide Should they or should they not. I believe that we should put names and faces on suicide you may be able to relate to it a little better. I know if they had put someones name and face i may know them but dont remember there name so the face helps you to know who did it and if you are scared of people copycatting There death put there sad story behind it to make them think twice about what they are thinking about doing. I also think that you should tell at the end of the story that how badly people look at you if you commit suicide. I also believe that someone else committing suicide would not make other people want to commit suicide I would think they would see how bad it was and decide not to commit suicide. I think that names and photos should be put on the suicide on tv just so we know and it keeps us up to date and we now and I think that it would keep me away from doing it so you should two.
ReplyDeleteWhen we see thing in the news such as shooting and murders, we think that it's horrible and how can people do that. We think that because we're not used to violence like that. My article was about gun violence in Chicago. That gangs walk around with guns and that civilians are afraid of getting caught in a shooting or drive by shooting. The streets are no longer a safe place to be. Here, we don't think that things like that would happen around here or very often. let's say we did have a shooting. then it would be all over the news and a big deal, but in Chicago when a shooting happens, it's no big deal because it happens frequently. Like if we hit a deer it's no big problem, because it's common, but if there was a deer in Chicago, it would be on the news since it doesn't occur that often.
ReplyDeleteThe targets are becoming younger as time goes on. the kids don't have a way to defend themselves that easily. They see what they are growing up with, and it becomes part of who they are. They could grow up seeing that all these people and high school students have guns, so they will want some. Then they will be part of the circle. Somewhere along the lines, it needs to stop. Banning guns is not the problem. the gun doesn't kill someone. The person behind the gun holding it kills people. We need to reach out to the younger generation and make them relize that it doesn't have to be like this. There can be a change made, but they will have to change it. They are the future, and they can decide what path to take. If they grow up and be like the rest of them, or if they decide to finish school and do something with their lives.
When I read and heard about these articles I thought something should be done about these things that aren't getting enough attention as they should be like the shootings in chicago. The article I read was about the gang related shootings it opened my eyes on this topic I hear about shootings all the time but I havent heard about any in chicago when I had hear since d there were 2,364 since the beginning of this year I was shocked. I was so glad when I got this article because my dad and I we are always talking abut guns and gun controle and we both have strong opinions on the topic. when they were talking about banning guns I hope they didin't because the gangs are all ready getting guns illegally I thought whats that going to do to stop them they will still get the guns illegally and then if they take away our guns they when they do attack nobody will be able to defend them selves. If something were to happen to me I want to be able to defend myself. In the article they also talked about limiting magazine sizes. I also didn't think this would help at all because it dosent take long to switch a magazine in the gun. I also heard on the radio recently some one, I don't remember who said that five shots from a revolver should be enough to kill some one. I disagree because there was a gunman who entered a woman's home and she and her twins went into a crawl space and she had a revolver and she shot the man five times and he was able to walk out the door after wards. About the shootings in Chicago the cops are quitting because there are so many shootings that they can't deal with it as with the other articles the person in charge dosen't seem to be doing any thing
ReplyDeleteThe amount of violence going on is unbelievable. People are just controlling there schools and doing what ever the want and they can't be controlled. There are kids just barging into class rooms in Philadelphia and beating up kids then leaving before the teachers can even do anything. This is making kids not want to come to school and it isn't making a safe learning experience. There are more kids In Philadelphia that get beat up every day then there is in the past ten years at our school. It is bad how the schools have no control over any of there students. This is a problem that I hope never hits near us.
ReplyDeleteArrange marriages are even causing similar affect in Pakistan. Girls are getting married off at the age of sixteen and not ok with the whole thing. If they leave there husbands they get beat and beat more and it often leads to suicide. These people aren't ok with getting married at the least but they are being told who they have to merry witch makes it even worse. This is a religion madder which makes it harder to handle. This article really opened my eyes to arranged marriages.
Another crazy thing that is happening is the amount of violence happening in Chicago people are getting shot on the streets and people aren't even fazing it. Gangs are having fights and destroying neighborhoods. The only way for kids to find out if there friends have been shot is at school. People are scared to be on the streets because of drive by shooting. This problem is out of hand and they don't know what to do about it.
A issue just as important is teen suicide. This is something that isn't been taken seriously. Kids are killing them selfs just because they are being bullied and harassed. A lot of time people can't tell if a kid is suicidally it just happens. People are trying to stop head lines that say teen suicide because they are afraid of copy cats and people that will follow. So really teen suicide isn't been getting taken seriously and it is happening to much and is a real problem.
So really all of these thing are real problems that aren't being taken seriously and it is over wealming all the stuff that is happening and we are not completely aware about.
In my article I read about the arranged marriages. In my opinion, I do not think that it is right that parents force their own kids, 16 years of age, and teenage girls to be exact, to marry older men that are at least in their 40's or older. They don't get to live what we call in the United States, a normal teenage life. These girls are not treated fairly at all, they may not even know who they are going to marry, they just get married and are pretty much under that mans control. They also talked about in the article how the suicide rates are extremely high in that area because the girls don't want to be put under so much work and control and so they kill themselves. I could not see my life having to be like that, for my dad choosing who I marry, i don't think that its right to have to be only 16 years old and your already getting married. The public didn't notice much of it at first, but when they heard about the killings and all the suicides they began to wonder and that when they finally realized that these were teenage girls being put threw this and being married to a much older man, the media and the public disagreed with the situation also.
ReplyDeleteThe school violence is not good at all. Kids should not be scared or worried about going to school, the teachers shouldn't be either. There is a school in Philadelphia and they have a ton of school violence. For example, the kids would go to school and have to almost watch their back at all times, because they never knew when at any time that they would be pulled from walking to were they were going and be pulled away and be beaten. Then when they were done getting beat up, they were just pushed back out to were they were walking again. The teachers on the other hand, they are experiencing violence also.They are worried that when they go up to teach their class that some students will go up and just beat them. I think that kids should feel safe at school and not worried everyday that they are going to get hurt.
Chicago has a lot of deaths caused by shootings. The shooting rate in chicago went up 12% and homicides went up 19%. people are literally scared to walk in their towns sidewalks and anywhere else because of gangs. The kids are one of the main target because for one reason is that they are defenseless, and two they are and "easy target" for the gangs to hurt or possibly kill, also the kids don't know how to handle it at school because they never know what will happen at school, they may go to school and find out that their best friend got killed.
Amanda Todd was a victim of being bullied. She was bullied because she had sent pictures of herself and they ended up on the internet. She also got blackmailed by and older man because he, you could say, stalked her and hunted her down and used the pictures against her, for anything. She was to they point where at school she was being called names and she was bullied by other girls and guys for it. She then committed suicide because she was done going threw what she was going threw.
The artical that I read was about how girls in Iraq don't have much freedom causing them to commit suicide. Some of the reasons why their's a lot of suicides is because the women don't get a choice of who they marie and their fathers are he ones who pick the husbands for their daughter. The women who are married see TV shows seeing that their relationship could be much better so they feel like hey have a horrible husband. Women cant flee their country to see other men so the women feel like they have no way out of forced marrige and that causes them to commit suicide. When girls commit suicide their fathers blame it on the TV shows that they watch, when really its the fathers fault for forcing their daughter to marie a man she did not like. The government sees the problem but they don't seem to care because they never try and salve this great issue.
ReplyDeleteI learned yesterday that in Philadelphia kids get attacked everyday by other kids. Every day an average of 25 kids get attacked, the kids who watch the attacks tend to become violent to and join the people who are attacking because their scared that they will be attacked someday. Their have been 169 teacher assaults on one year and this number has been getting bigger and bigger. Police have gotten involved a few times but they really do anything about it. Almost not even half of the attacks get reported because the school is more worried about their reputation than their own safety, Since most of the attacks don't get reported then they can't expect the horrible situation to get resolved.
When I hear people talking about their articles I am surprised at what this world has come to. It has change so much from when I was a little kid. I can remember that five years ago we did not have to worry about bullying, shootings and schools. The last I knew is that schools should be safe but when I heard about New Town and the Colorado movie theatre shootings. I knew that this country was changing in a dramatic way.
ReplyDeleteFive years ago I did not have to worry about bullying and now look people are Killing themselves! People who are bullied really can not escape the bullying because they are involved in so much. They can be involved in sports or just on social networking sites. These days the world has changed. People are killing themselves because they are being bullied. It used to be if a teen was bullied at school he or she could go home and get away from it but not any more. People are taking advantage of networking sites and bullying people away from school. Which is a major problem because they are being bullied 24/7. That is why I am glad we live in a small town in Iowa because we dont have to worry about being teased al the time. Sure we are teased and we have our own flaws but when we have some one being a bully or is being bullied we step in. We do not care what the other person thinks of us we our selves and nobody can change that about us.
Violence has also increased from when I was a little kid. When I was a kid you rarely heard of a shooting or rape but now you hear of it almost every day. You may even hear it more than once a day. It scares me that in Chicago violence has increased by nineteen percent. Also that children have been shot and killed! That is awful.
Arranged marriage has been going on for long time I know that but it is not right. Women should have a right to who they marry. Arranged marriage is causing suicide in women and girls who have to be married away. Girls as old as sixteen are being married away to men they do not know. Some are even getting married to their own cousins. It also is causing young girls to kill themselves so they do not have to be married away to strange men.
You know. I have always wanted ether to live in a huge city (Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Chicago, etc...) so I could explore and have many things to do! I'm not downing Iowa but it doesn't have much excitement. My friend in New York always talks about walking around doing things with her friends and after reading these articles I think Wow! You have a lot of guts! These four articles have changed my out look on the cities and have made me feel glad that I live in small town Hopkinton, population of 700. When I heard my classmates talk about what they have read it makes me compare my life to the life of others, and its a lot better. many teens commit suicide because of bullying, abuse, mental problems, and much more reasons. The number of teen suicides have been rising over the past few years. Now, it is at its all time high! Even teens in other countries and continents like Africa have had many suicides. women in those countries get married while in their teen years. The parents pick who their child will marry and then they get married. The stranger could be twice or even three times the age but that doesn't matter. Some of the young women would even marry a relative! (cousin) The girls would commit suicide because of feeling trapped. They want freedom like they see other kids have on T.V. Lets get back to violence and big cities... Chicago has the highest crime rate in the U.S. It has even passed up New York! People are deathly afraid of the city! Even the schools are controlled by kiddie gangs. They pick a target, beat him/her up, move to the next one. The Teachers can't do anything or else they become the targets! This isn't only in Chicago but all the other states and cities as well. Like New York. I couldn't live there. I don't know how my friend can be happy there. Maybe she has adapted. I think we need more schools for troubled kids who have acted in these attacks. Keep the bad kids out of our schools.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of violence in this world. It has been and always will be around. A lot of the violence involves kids, guns, or both. Some violence is just shrugged off or hidden. When a bunch of kids get killed in Connecticut it is all over the news. When a group of people get shot in Chicago, it is ignored.
ReplyDeleteKids get attacked at schools, and teachers don't do much about it. Kids will go from one target to the next and take any kind of punishment they get, with ease. We need to do something to stop this. Innocent kids are getting hurt and nothing serious is being done.
Teen suicide is high and it can happen to anyone. Some people believe it is not right to put it in the news so it is shrugged off. If kids who had thoughts about suicide saw this and saw how it effected everyone, they may have second thoughts. They need to let it get out so others can see and learn from the mistakes of others. I am not saying to put every suicide in the news. Just a few and just let others know what is going one.
In other countries, girls are committing suicide because they are married. Young kids are having arranged marriages with men their father picked out. They sometimes marry relatives if that is who their father picks. The girls don't agree with this so they kill themselves so they don't have to deal with it. The government doesn't care. That needs to change if they want more people.
People get use to seeing homicides so it becomes less of a news worthy topic. After these shootings happen in Chicago, they don't do much. After the shooting in Connecticut, people are trying to ban guns. A lot of violence in the U.S. involves guns. That just shows it is to easy for people to access them. People blame the guns for the killings and shootings. It is not the guns, it is the people. We need to make it harder for people to get guns, not get rid of them all together.
When people are afraid to walk by a group of people because they might get shot is ridiculous. Gangs are getting young kids involved. Now the shootings are in schools. The kids are getting pulled in by peer pressure. They don't have other things to get them involved in the community instead of fighting over something as stupid as a street corner. It doesn't belong to them so why fight over it. The kids that are pressured into the gangs don't realize that they are putting their life on their line. They don't know that someday, they might not make it home to their family. We need to get kids involved in the community and other activities and inform them of what they could be doing instead of spending your life with the chance of getting killed.
Violence is a huge problem. It involves people of all ages, races, and cultures. It is everywhere. Sometimes there are things done about it. It may not be enough or it may not always be the right thing. We need to think about every perspective, not just one. This can be stopped, we just need to get on the same page and do something.
I think gun control is stupid because no one is going to stop using guns. I personaly think the only ones who should not be able to buy a gun is people with mental-instability and or with a felony. people are going to bring guns in illegally any ways so banning guns will do no good any ways i think if the government puts gun control on that there will be a retaliation agianst the government.
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard my peers talk about there article it is funny how every thing they talked about happpend in the United Staes today. I mean when i told my article it was not even like the articles that they have. It is sad that how the fathers arrange the married of there daughter. I think that is dumb how they do that but in their country it is a males in more control. I am not a girl so I don't know how that would make me fell. If I was one of the fathers and i had to arrange my daughters married, I would not fell right about it. They are committing suicide because of it i don't think that is far how they don't even have a say in how they are going to marry. One of the girls that got married to her cousin. That is sick in my opinion. There has been double suicedes in there country and even more then the United States. Well crazy stuff has been going on in the United Sates. In Chicago gangs and people are shotting each other for no reason at all. I mean why do you want to kill people for no reason, it is dumb. There is more then one person that gets shot in Chicago. They do not want to put it on the news because they think it is going to get worse. I think if no one knows about it the problem will not get solved. The next think in the United States is that there is kids going to school and beating up kids for no reason. That is dumb and the teacher can't get in it and stop it because they will be tarketed next. They can't even give they a detention because it does not work. Like in Newtown the kids got shot and killed for no reason. I think they need to be punished.
ReplyDeleteThe Storie I here from my class mates about suicides, arranged marriage, and shootings in Philadelphia and Chicago is just awful! I can't believe the things people do to drive people to the edge! Amanda Todd story became international when she posted her video on YouTube then later killed herself because she couldn't take the bullying any longer. The suicides in Philadelphia because the kids getting beat up at school in the middle of class is rising, they just can't take it anymore. How do you live with yourself after you find out the person you have been bullying killed them self because you drove them to the edge and they weren't happy with there lives anymore.

I don't think I could deal with it either, honestly. If my dad had to pick my husband I would be REALLY scared. The fact that I wouldn't be able to choose who I love is scary.
Philadelphia and Chicagos deaths are sky rocketing! Girls at a Philadelphia high school are putting valceline on there skin and scarfs on there hair and running into the middle of a class and beating people up is awful! Why do they even do that? Do they feel happy about them selfs afterwards? I sure wouldn't. In Chicago the playgrounds are battlegrounds, the streets are cemeteries and the school is somewhere to morn about the friends they lost in a shooting is sad. They should do something about gun control. I really dont know much about guns but i do think something needs to be done, for the sake of the children having to live being scared to walk down the streets and going to school.
In our world and country there is a lot of violence and controversial problems. Some of these include school violence, suicide, and arranged marriages. I would have to say I am against all three of these. In the article I read, it talked about the violence in the Philadelphia school district and how massive of a problem it is. Philadelphia has been the most violent large city in America for the last two years according to FBI crime statistics and doesn't seem to be be improving now or near future. This city is full of poverty, hunger, drug abuse, parental neglect, and crime. Many of these kids might not have a good home life already, and then they have to come to school when there is an average of 25 students and teachers being beaten, robbed, sexually assaulted, or victims of other violent crimes. Superintendent Arlene C. Ackerman is trying to improve the schools and fix this problem by enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on discipline and expelling students, but this is a national problem and it will take everyone to solve it. On top of the 4,541 violent incidents by June in the 2009-10 school year, many of the teachers are saying that they are being swayed not to report all the incidents for the betterment of the school's reputation. This means that there are most likely many more violent incidents happening throughout the schools. This situation isn't good no matter how you look at it. Plus this isn't even just happening in the high schools! Nine out of every ten schools in the district from elementary on up have had violent incidents happen in there school. This is a problem that we need to solve as a nation and it will take everyone to stop it. This also makes me realize how lucky I am to not have all this violence happening in my school.

In June, 319 students from Chicago public schools had been shot, 24 of which fatal. Violence is also starting to happen younger and younger in Chicago just like it is in the Philadelphia schools. Some say that we should ban guns, but I, as well as many others, don't think that is a solution to this problem. It isn't the gun who is killing people, it is the person behind the gun. One way I think we could help control this problem is to increase gun control, but I don't believe we have to necessarily take them away all together. Then the article about suicide really showed how big of a problem it is in the United States, Canada, and other countries as well. In Canada they won't even allow suicide in the headlines anymore. One huge reason behind teen suicide is because of bullying. There are many kids bullied each day and many of these kids end up committing suicide when it gets really bad. Now they are building mental institutions to help teens with suicidal thoughts. I think this will be able to help many teenagers. This is a huge problem that is not the solution to all their problems. The last article is about arranged marriages. In other countries some girls are still being forced upon girls. One girl in Indonesia was forced to marry her cousin who was twice her age. She was against this because she wanted to marry someone that she loved. She ended up committing suicide because she thought it was better than having to be married to a man she didn't love for the rest of her life. This is too bad that many girls are being forced to marry men that they are twice their age and that they don't even love. Isn't the point of marriage to marry someone you love that you want to spend the rest of your life with? Suicide from arranged marriages is a growing problem that our world need to address.
In our nation and world there are many problems. None of them will be solved unless we do something about it. Like it said in the article I read, it is a nation problem and it will take everyone not just one or two.
The article I read was very interesting, all the articles were good. Now have you ever heard of parents forcing you to marry someone you don't love? Well my article was about that. Women is other countries are force to marry their cousins, now tell me, why would they marry there cousins? Why are the parents forcing them to marry a 40 year old when the daughter is 16? Who will stop this madness, if the government can't? The real question is, should they ban guns, period? Now if you ask a hunter or a towns person, your going to get a complete different answer, trust me. Now it should be that you can only have a gun if you fit the requirement, like are you aged, or do you have a criminal record, that sort of things. Now through all the articles I read, maybe one or two of them mentioned the government helping. Where is the government in this? Does he care about his people, or is he just going to push these issues away? Suicides are sky rocketing, because of bullies. People are treated by bullies, and so the people can't handle it, and commit suicide, the next day it's in the newspaper! Mothers need to protect their kids of the internet, because cyber bulling happens! I think the internet is a dangerous place, and they need something to make it safer, and stop the cyber bullying!
Many of the things in the article I read about the violence and bulling going on in the schools are absolutely horrific. These kids are out of control. They people would cover their faces with Vaseline and scarves so they didn't get their hair ripped out and scars on their faces while fighting. These girls would roam the halls and when they found their victim they would barge into the room, grab the student, and assault them. Then they would leave these poor students beaten, bruised, and dazed. The violence is growing in the schools of Philadelphia. It has grown 5% in the last year. On average 25 students or teachers get assaulted in a day. And that might not even be accurate because most people don't report it. Thats unreal! It should never be that bad but it is because one, the neighborhoods are full of violence, and two, the school isn't doing anything to stop these bulling little kids from doing anything. It was the same in the other article about the suicide. These innocent kids are committing suicide because they are getting bullied everyday. And that is not right. Those schools and parents should be watching the children. Its not right to bully! This violence needs to stop.

ReplyDeleteOne family shared their story of their son who had depression, they got professional help and tried everything to help him through it. there have been many big stories of suicide in the past years. Amanda Todd was one of the biggest suicide stories in recent years. she had posted pictures online that she got bullied for. After a while she couldn't take it and she killed herself.
Gun violence in Chicago or any large city or town is a problem the police look at it as a health issue and not a crime. there should be more done about it and banning guns there is just going to make people want them more and it could go up.
Arranged marrage is a problem in some parts of the world and theres no way out of it some would rather die tha have to marry someone they didn't get to choose.

ReplyDeleteThese articles really made me think. I am really naive when it comes thinking the world is a good and peaceful place, but that's not the case. I read the article about the gangs in Philadelphia that have entered the school and they abuse students, staff, and administrators. If you were to walk into the school you would see a gang walking the halls. That just makes me sick, because I can't relate to it and it isn't real to me. In Delhi, or even Iowa things don't happen like that. Another article talked about gun violence in Chicago, people are not safe in that city anymore. The last article, is a huge problem, relating with teen suicide. The list goes on and on, people don't feel safe anymore, and why should they?
Violence has taken up a huge problem in my community, my state, my country, and my world. Reading about how this kind of violence is seeping into public places scares me. In Chicago, groups outlawed any guns being bought in Chicago, but that didn't stop it. They thought around the law and saw that it was possible to bring them into Chicago. Now, the problem is still on the streets with guns. Gangs have taken over a place of learning and peace. Kids go home beaten, sexually abused, and on their last verge of life, so they take their own. It is like a cycle, it starts out in the community with guns being abused, then it seeps into schools, and soon enough it is bad enough that teens kill themselves because of the violence and destruction of everything around them. A deadly cycle we need to resolve, and not push aside for someone else to handle. We need to fight.
It takes a community to raise one child. Right now we need a community to raise a community so we can stray away from all of this. We need to find peace and stay there.

Some more information I didnt know is that reporters can't journal on suicides because some people try to copy what they do. Many murders in chicago have not been reported because there are so many that go on. There has been a lot of people that moved out of chicago because of the murdering. They even put up there territory.

After reading all these articles, I have realized that other people in this world don't have it as good as we do here. I have never even thought about being forced to get married or walking threw the park and getting shot at. One thing I never heard of was students at school going around beating kids and even teachers up.I have realized that living here isn't that bad because we don't have many issues like the ones we have read about. The thought of marrying a mean weird lady that I don't even like overwhelms me. I don't think I would be able to live with that person for the rest of my life. Marrying a person my parents picked out would not go over well with me.

It's sad that kids kill themselves because they're not happy. That's why there are some people who have had a relative comet suicide that go around and preach why not to do it. Teen suicide needs to stop.

The kids would get away with it to. I have never heard of a person getting to hit a teacher and get away with it. The schools are starting to get security gards to stop the kids from beating the kids up but you have to pay the security guys money. Not all schools have money. When people get bullied they don't want to get hurt so they will commit suicide and put a video of themselves before, so that people can hear their story about what happened. Mothers are getting so worried about their kids, doing this stuff. Another thing that creates some of the violence in the United States is the arranged marriages. The girls that are forced to marry these guys will commit suicide because they don't want to be with them. Marriage is supposed to be with the person you want to be with, not the one you are forced too. In this story the girl was set up with one of her relatives by her dad, but she didn't want to be with him, so she committed suicide. I think there should be more help. I feel like there is not enough people trying to stop all of the violence. They just keep saying that it is a big problem, and they think that if there were more activities for the kids then their wouldn't be as much. Why don't they do something about that then, instead of just telling reporters about it. Reading the article about all the violence that goes occurs in schools in Philadelphia was shocking. Then I listened to others talk about the articles they read and I was even more stunned. It's crazy to think about how much violence really does go in in our world, or even our country. You hear about these things happening all the time on the news, but you blow them off thinking those things will never happen where you live. But if you look back to a couple days ago, our school was in lockdown and we were all in danger. Luckily, we were all okay, but we're not always going to be that lucky. Violence happens all over the world and it's getting closer and closer to where we live. We all need to stop being so ignorant to what we hear on the news and think of how that might be us on the news someday. These articles made me realize this.
ReplyDeleteReading about all the violence that takes place in schools in Philadelphia makes me realize how lucky I am to be going to a school here in a small town in Iowa. I couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like to go to a school where I'm afraid of being beaten, robbed, sexually assaulted, or other forms of violent crimes. I can't imagine witnessing dozens of cases of physical assault each day I am in school. I am extremely blesses to be able to come to school each day and having by biggest worry be about getting my homework done, and not being beaten in the middle of class.
Hearing about others tell me about their articles they read about forced marriages, shootings, and teen suicide make me feel even more lucky, and make me feel even more sorrow for the people that are dealing with these issues. I go to a school where I don't see bullying as a huge problem, but one that people need to continue to be aware of. Bullying is a serious problem and can lead to teen suicides. I go to a school where I don't need to worry about getting shot while on my way to or from school.
I feel really bad for people who are forced into marriages with people whom they don't love. These people feel like they are stuck with two decisions-to either spend the rest of their life with someone they don't love, or to commit suicide. When i get married, I want the person to be someone I actually love and not be forced.
All these articles really opened my eyes. Life is bigger than just the small towns we live in. Things our happening in other cities, states, and countries that we need to be aware of. Everyone can do their part to better these problems and help to stop violence.
In my article I read about the rising number of teen suicides. Teen suicides have been rising in numbers since 1970. Many news stations don't report teen suicides like parents would like them to. Parents want the death of their child to be reported like it is any other news story, they want the name and face given. It makes the story realistic and it keeps viewers interested, it can also lead to viewers reaching out to the families. These families go through a lot when they lose a child due to suicide they need all kinds of strength and support, not only from their direct family members but also from strangers who are kind enough to help them. If we put a name and face to a suicide, more people will realize that teen suicide is a rising problem and we need to find a way to help those teens thinking about it. Nobody wants to lose their child because of a group of kids at school or even those text messages or Facebook messages. If we can find a way to reduce the amount of bullying that goes on at schools, the number of teens that choose suicide as the only way to get rid of the pain will go down. We need to reach out to those teens who are thinking about suicide, we need to let them know they are not alone. They need our support, not just a handful of us, everyone. It is a national problem and if we dont stop it, it will continue to rise.
ReplyDeleteMy peers got the chance to tell me about the article they read; arranged marriages, Chicago shootings, and Philadelphia school violence. I am against all three of these, there needs to be a stop to all of it. In my mind, arranged marriages are not acceptable in any state or country. it should be illegal for a parent to force their son or daughter into marrying someone they dont even know. You should be able to fall in love with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, not the person your parents want you to spend the rest of your life with. It isn't their choice, it's yours. The government isn't doing anything to stop the arranged marriages, so I think they don't know about them. How would you? Two people can get married at a court house because one of them is going to be deported. They may not even know each other, yet they are kind enough to marry someone and move on with their life.
The shootings in Chicago are becoming more and more dangerous. Young people are the main target. For instance, during one school shooting 24 children died and many others were injured. we dont know why this is happening but the government is making gun laws more forceful in Chicago. Chicago's shooting rate is higher than New York's, even with the help of the government.
Philadelphia schools have a rising problem of violence. Thousands of incidents yearly are reported in the district by parents and staff. The schools aren't doing anything to help with the problem. The superintendent says that it is getting better, when it ias actually getting worse.

The people might spread thought out the US and kill people we know. The Gangs could spread and kill other kids or people. The gun band are taking place in Chicago but, the guns are still getting transported. Those are the guns ending up in the killers hands. The police have been cut down and there are fewer that want to have any thing to do the gangs and the gun violence. The good people of Chicago don't think that there should be more guns because it could turn into the wild west. Now we kwon that we should not go to Chicago.

In my article it talked about how there are so many suicides that no one really knows about because they don't publish stores about them in the news paper. Therefore no one out side of the people who are close to the person, or the person that is close to the victim tells others about the suicide knows. It isn't very good in the mothers point of view because they don't thing people are as knowledgable about suicide, and they are more likely to commit suicide. I can see both sides of the topic because the family doesn't always want people to know all their business, but it would also help if it scared teens about even thinking about committing suicide.

It also tells a story about a kid that went to one of them but it didn't end up working out and he ended up killing himself because they couldn't get him to think strait again. This goes to show those centers and medications that are supposed to help anyone and everyone can't always work so if those teens were more knowledgeable and suicides were more public.
The other articles were also very important for everyone to read because we need to prevent some of the stuff going on in this country. One of the articles talked about how the playgrounds were turning into battle fields and the streets cemeteries in chicago because of the gun violence in that city. People can't buy guns in that city but people still bring the guns in from other areas. The city needs to put more enforcement on the law that there are no guns in chicago. I think that the city is scared of what the reaction will be.
The other article is about in Philadelphia there are gangs in schools that come into schools and abuse, bully, and sexually abuse other students in class. It is not a very good situation when teachers and students are getting abused by others. It is a very bad problem to have people getting abused in schools. It is a problem that needs to be fixed.
These articles have a lot of value to them. One of them is about shootings in Chicago and the gangs. Another article is about teen suicides and no one was talking about it. The next one is about arranged marriage and young girls are trying to kill themselves because they don’t want to marry their relatives. The last one is about violence in a school and kids and teachers being bullied. A lot of people don't have what we have, they have it a lot harder. I think that more people have to watch out for a lot of things like gangs, and bullying everywhere. We have to deal with that kind of thing but it doesn’t get that extreme that we don’t respect our teachers and try to kill people. I also learned that you have to take what some people say to you like you didn’t hear it because you don’t need to kill yourself because of it. I do agree that you have to do something about because if you don’t do anything about it then it will get more worst then it already is.

Every where from the kids beating on each other and the teachers to being bullied. I'm lucky that I don't live around all of that violence and I feel safe in my community. ReplyDeleteI read the article about the violence in city schools. This article left me speechless. In these Philadelphia schools, groups of kids would wander the halls like gangs, looking for their next victim. They would smear vaseline on their faces and tie scarves around their heads. These gangs would then burst into a classroom like a tornado, and beat kids up while the teacher was standing right there. I never knew these things happened in the U.S. It especially surprised me that these incidents happened in city schools. Of course, I knew violence and bullying happened around the world, but I had no idea that it was to this extent. In Philadelphia, this violence in schools is somewhat normal. In one year at a school district, there were over 4,000 violent incidents. That is more kids than are in our whole district. Yes, these school districts are much larger than ours, but that is still an astonishing amount of violence going on. These violent occurrences not only happened to students, but also to teachers and staff. These schools even had security guards, but it didn't help. One teacher said that you could punch a teacher and still go to school.
These kids also had violent neighborhoods. The violence kept rising and rising. The school was supposed to be a place where kids could go to be safe, but that was no longer the case. When asked to compare this article to my life, I couldn't. I have never seen or heard of something this horrible. I couldn't even imagine going to a school packed with violence. Something needs to be done about these schools, and something needs to be done fast.
There was also an article about gun violence in Chicago. The gun violence is Chicago is growing fast. The playgrounds have turned to battlegrounds, and streets have turned to cemeteries. Chicago's gun violence is higher than New York's and LA's. Many shootings go unreported. They think that army innocent people with guns will help stop the violence.
The other article was about teen suicide. The media isn't supposed to talk about teen suicide. If they do, they can't use the victim's name. A teen, Amanda, made a video about her story, and how she couldn't handle the pressure. She posted this video online for everyone to see. Many other teens started to do this as well. An adult whose child killed herself goes out and talks to others about her story, and tells how others can help.
Another article was about arranged marriage. In Syria, parents are forcing their kids to marry other family members. The women are not happy about this at all. They watch T.V. and see how marriage in is in the United States, and they want it to be like that where they are. These women get so upset that they commit suicide. The priests think that the girls are being possesed, but they are really just unhappy. They don’t want to tell their parents that they are unhappy, so they kill themselves.
I think all of these issues are bad, and they need to be addressed. Violence, arranged marriage, gun violence and teen suicide are issues that need to be discussed. These issues are causing lives to be lost, and that shouldn’t be happening. I think something needs to be done about all of these issues.
The crime rates have been going up in Chicago. It's higher there than any of the major cities. 87% of the crimes deal with guns. The government is trying to do something about it. It relates to the new law they want to pass on needing a license to own a gun and if you don't than you can't have a gun.

In my article a 16 year old girl from Iraq tried to kill herself after being forced to marry her cousin. In Iraq they have forced marriages, which means their parents find someone they like for you, and you have to marry them. It’s usually someone in your family like your cousin. Some women are alright with that but others that have seen an American soap opera want that life. They don’t want to be forced to marry someone they don’t love. That’s why they kill themselves. Sometimes they aren’t the ones to kill themselves. If their father, brother, or someone from the husbands family finds out you don’t like or want to be with him they kill you and make it look like an accident. The government doesn’t do anything about it because they think that the women had killed herself.
It will be a value of my life, because I won’t try and commit suicide. Some people take their life for granted while others wish they could have that life. Even when life gets rough, you just have to keep going. That’s the only way you get out. Taking your life or someone elses lives hurts not only you but everyone that was involved with you or someone elses life.
In the articles that we read in class, there was a lot of information that most people don't know about. In one of the articles, it talked about how some families choose their daughter’s spouses. In these families, usually the father and brothers of the girl choose the girl’s husband. A lot of the time, the husband they choose is already a family member, such as a cousin. Sometimes, this could lead to suicide within the family.

In the next article, it talked about a girl who put a video on youtube about why she was going to commit suicide. Later, after she had posted the video, she did commit suicide. The video went viral. The news discussed how people should know about these incidents and that people should be able to ask for help with these problems.
In my article, it told about a Philadelphia school that has a serious problem with violence between students and staff. A group of kids go around the school in black and attack and beat students and staff. A lot of incidents go unreported because the school doesn’t want to attract attention. The school has no authority because the adults are even being attacked. A lot of kids in the district live in poverty, so that could lead to some of the violence, but something needs to be done, and people need to know about this violence in schools.
All of these articles make you realize how valuable life is and how many things go unnoticed in life. People should be more aware of what is going on in their surroundings. Some people have tougher lives than other people, everyone is different. Everyone is fighting a different battle. Most people don’t realize the true gift life is.

ReplyDeleteThe articles I read were mostly about violence and that its becoming a bigger issue now. Women are committing suicide because they are being forced to marry someone they do not love. Gangs are now walking into schools and assaulting people. The violence in Chicago is so bad that people are afraid to even walk out of their homes without the fear of being shot by gangs. Teens are committing suicide because they are bullied and can't take it anymore so they kill themselves.

Women in Sinjar are committing suicide more and more now because they are being forced to marry someone that they do not love. 16 year old Jenan Merza had shot herself in the abdomen with her brothers Glock pistol. 20 days ago she married her cousin because she was forced by her parents to marry because of their religion. There religion is a mixture of elements from Islam and strains of Persian religions. They believe in a special figure called Melek Taus, whom Muslims refer to as Satan. Because of this they have been targeted by terrorists because they believe in this figure. Officials also say that some suicides are actually honor killings where the family members kill a woman that commits adultry or wants to marry out of her religion. I would not want to do that because it just doesn't feel right to be forced into a marriage.
"Climate of Violence Stifles City Schools"
Gangs have been attacking students and staff in Chicago schools. They rob or sexualy assault the student or teacher but the school can't do much about this problem. They need to take more action about this problem because its becoming bigger to prevent the students and staff from being assaulted by these gangs. Some schools shut down and become private schools. this won’t stop the gangs all the way though because they will still keep coming back.
"Chicago Violence"
There is lots of violence in Chicago that doesn't make it onto the news. Gangs will kill people and assault students. Now mostly everyone on the street owns a gun. People don't want to go outside for the fear of being shot by a gang member. People also don't want to get causght up in all the violence thats around Chicago.
"Teen Suicide Rate"
A girl made a video on YouTube about her problems and shortly committed suicide. Her mom wanted to get the video out to warn people that suicide is not the answer. One boy committed suicide because he was bullied at school because he was different. The media hasn't paid much attention to suicide now because its always happening. They should pay attention to it more because suicide is a real thing that happens every day so its a big deal.
The violence everywhere in the United States is worst than most places around the world but gun violence in the United states is one of the worst types of violence.
ReplyDeleteThe violence in Chicago very bad. Kids in the back streets of Chicago are scared to walk down the sidewalks. They are scared of the gangs hat might be waiting for someone that is "trespassing" on their side walk. The gun violence in Chicago is three times as bad as it is in New York City. All of this violence and all the kids and teachers that are in the middle of the violence that are killed go unnoticed. When the kids in the Conneticut school were shot it was broadcast all over the news. But the shootings in Chicago that happen everyday nobody even knows about. The state is trying to do something about it but they haven't found the right way to stop people from getting the guns and using them in the wrong way.
Teen suicide happens all the time but it rarely comes up on the news. That is because they are arguing whether or not to make it public. They realize that is they put it on the news kids may realize other kids have the same problem but it could also cause a suicide chain. Amanda Todd was one of the first public suicides.
Tashata, just a normal girl, looked for warnings at school. She watched the girls and the boys. She knew is when it was going to happen when a group of girls walked past with vaseline, that they were going to put all over their face to prevent getting cut and scared. When they came back a whole group of kids, including the girls, came into Tashata’s classroom and began beating her up. It only lasted two minutes and the kids were gone. There are a lot of fights that happen in this school. The grew 2,000 in one year. The super intendent said it was a national problem. The kids and teachers are getting hurt. Plus, the parents and police aren’t getting told that the kids are getting hurt.
Forced marriages in Iraq are causing girls to commit suicide. The technology allows the girls to see what life is like in other places. There has been fifty suicides in the last year that were the result of forced marriages. A lot of them are being covered up so that people don’t think that is what happens when marriage is forced upon girls.
The violence around the world is so bad but it is all being covered up or not broadcast so that people can see it. Everyone wants other people to think that nothing is wrong but there is we just don’t know about it.
My article was about the Philadelphia school violence. It's really crazy and almost makes me think twice if this actually happens. I guess it obviously does happen, but it's hard to comprehend. We have a pretty good school and I'm really fortunate of that. We don't have to worry about these kinds of things happening. And if they were to happen, we'd solve it because it'd be our problem. We would make it our responsibility to have a save district for everyone. If if wasn't our problem, say the kid that was causing the problems was having a hard time at home, we'd help solve that problem as well. The thing is, in the article I read, the schools that these violent incidents were happening they didn't think that it was the school's responsibility to solve the problem. Or, they were terrified to take a stand. It's scary to think that it would actually come down to that.
ReplyDeleteTeen suicide is a scary thing. It's scary to think that someone's life is actually that bad that they even have to make that an option. That talking to someone, going to a professional isn't even enough to take away the pain of feeling alone or unloved. I hate to say it, but I wish that they showed all of the suicides on television. It happens on a daily basis, and our world/country needs to find a solution to stop it. To help those who are thinking about committing suicide. I can only think of Amanda Todd as a public suicide.
I am really thankful for where I live. We have it pretty good around here.
All of these articles brought some not-so-good things that are happening to our attention. Often these events are underestimated when they're actually making huge impacts.
ReplyDeleteMy article was about violence in Philadelphia schools. This violence is unbelievable. Gang-like groups come in and attack teachers and students. Administrators are the real problem, but they choose to blame it on teachers. It's sad that these violent crimes define their school; I hope someone takes some positive action very soon.
Another article was about gun violence in Chicago, where it doesn't get much publicity. Gangs are going around killing people to the extent of which people are afraid to go out, in fear of shootings. Many people on the street carry guns, but people think that more youth group activities could help prevent this.
An article about arranged marriages talked about suicide rates being higher because of the arranged marriages. Ms. Merza shot herself for being forced to marry her cousin when she didn't want to. There are many cases like this, but some cases aren't even suicide but murder by a a family member.
Bullying is a big issue and is causing more teen suicides. This is one of the saddest cases, seeing as bullying should be easily prevented. Amanda Todd, a victim of bullying, made a Youtube video about bullying that went viral. Her mom then hoped this video would make bullying more known and tried to spread it into the media.
These articles all teach us to be aware that these things are happening and we need to take action to prevent and stop it in even our own towns and schools. And remember not to take everything for granted, because you have it better than you know.
There is much violence in many cities, but one we don't hear about often is Philadelphia. The violence in the schools there is so extreme that even the teachers aren't safe. No one ever expects to be attacked during an algebra test, or while walking down the hall, and they shouldn't have to worry about it. The teachers can't do anything about it and are told not to report the attacks. Then the administrators say that the attack rate is going down, when in all likelihood, they are just going unreported. It is wrong for children and adolescence to have to go through the fear and pain that they have to in these schools, note that it is not just the high schoolers it is any age. In one case there was a sixth grader that brought a gun into the building, another there were fifth graders grinding on each other. No one does anything about it, most are not reported, or go unnoticed until the police have made an arrest. There are working cameras all around the school that catch every gruesome and brutal detail of all the fights, and yet the school administrator still has the audacity to tell the media and parents that the attacks are not happening as frequently. How can they ignore the hard evidence, the undeniable proof, that the attacks are still happening? Everyday, on average, there are twenty-five people attacked, twenty-five people now going home beaten and bruised, twenty-five people fearing the next attack. There are witnesses, there are tapes, there are bruises, and people still deny the fact that it is not only continuing to happen, but, more than likely, it is on the rise. The classroom should be a safe place, a safe haven, if you will, but in these schools the classroom is a prison, a jail cell keeping them locked up, until it is their turn to be beaten, until it is their time to be victimized.
ReplyDeleteIn Indonesia there is a truly awful side to marriage. The fact that you are forced to marry someone you may not even know, who could be twice your age, and you cannot get out of the marriage, or you will be disowned by your family. The only way out for most women, well girls really, is suicide. Imagine being sixteen years old, and married, not to your high school love, but to some old man twice your age, and not only is divorce not an option, but you are stuck with him for the rest of your life, as you cannot leave the country. You have grown up too fast, you want your childhood back, knowing you cannot change the past you see only one option. So, you end your life, hoping to find something anything better than this horrible existence. It is the worst thing anyone can do, but for most girls forced into marriage it is the only way out. There needs to be changes in Indonesia, to give women more rights, to let them choose who they want to marry, to let them live a longer happier life.
In Chicago there are so many shootings that if they were on the news there would be no end to the news, it would take hours, in some cases maybe days. The breaking news when the killer is caught covers up a new shooting. Many are no longer covered on the news because there are too many to cover. There are many thing they are going unnoticed, and they shouldn't be. There need to be more things done to protect the people of the city. Protection needs to be upgraded and people need to realize that you cannot shoot random people for no reason and get away with it. There are many things that could be done, people just have to do them.

ReplyDeleteI read an article that talks about Chicago and its shootings. There were a few things that stood out to me. One of those things were about their children's playgrounds. In the article, it said playgrounds are turning into battlefields. Just this sentence scares me. Now if I were a parent in Chicago, I wouldn't know what to think. Parents may feel they cannot let their children walk to streets freely without having to feel they need to be there with them. It's sad children cannot walk the streets without the thought of "will I live today?" going through their head.
One article I read was about a little girl. People with vaseline on their faces, (to protect from any scaring,) walked into the classroom in which she was in, threw her to the ground, and started to beat her up. Then, they walked out, as if nothing had happened. As I read further into the article, it also said that children could walk into a classroom, hit the teacher, then walk back out. If that were to happen in Iowa, we would be hunted down and thrown into jail. I believe this is unacceptable.
One other article that I read was about teen suicide. News reporters are NOT suppose to reveal any information about teen suicide cases or anything related to it. But, this particular case was different. A teenager hung herself in her family room. That is when her mothe decided to start a group that helps prevent teen suicides from happening. They met on a certain night of the week, and talked abou why they wanted to commit sucide. To me, I think is a really good idea. infact, I wish there waas a group that was located close enough that I could go to. I would want to go just to see what it would be like.
the last article that I read was about marriag at a young age. One girl had to get married when she was only 14 years old. Of course, this didn’t happen in the United States. If I had to get married by the age of 14, I would be long gond and have had to have started a family of my own almost two years ago, (on November 2nd that is.)
