Dropout Articles: a self-reflection

Dropout Articles: a self-reflection

Why do you think the dropout rate is so high? Reflect. What might schools do to lower the dropout rate? Pick one (or more) statistic from this article and reflect.

  1. I don't understand why anyone would think about dropping out! Most people are smart enough and are determined to receive the diploma. On the other hand, you have the students who are thinking about dropping out. I think that they are dropping out because they think nobody cares about them, their grades might be slipping, or they don't want to go to college so why waste your time in school. The dropout rate might be high because the students don't have anyone to go to for advice. Their families might be using drugs or something worse then that. I think in order to prevent the students from dropping out, the school needs to step in and notice what is going on! Maybe the school needs to tell the teachers "Hey, that kid is struggling, are you able to have some one on one time with him/her?" The kids also need to be willing to try in school. Even though their outside life might be bad, they are in school where everything matters. Just think, do I want to earn my diploma or not? In high school it is the time to think because when you are a senior you are worrying about college and jobs! Most people in the real world don't except people for jobs or colleges that don't have a diploma! Stay in school because later in life you will be glad that you were able to stay in school and get a decent job!

    1. I can't believe why people would drop out of school just because they don't care! Many of these kids do not realize how much money they could make even if they just get a high school diploma. Many of the kids could be very smart but they choose not to because they don't care. If i were to talk to dropouts, i would stress that school is very important and that every time someone drops out of school it costs all of us others a bunch of money, along with the state! Many come home, and say their parents don't care, or that when they come to school it is boring and like jail. Parents really do care even though it may not seem like it. Your parents will always love you, and they will never forget that you are their son or daughter. I would also say that if you stay in school, you will live a much happier life because you will have more money to spend on extra activities. That is why schooling is very important to kids in high school and even college, so stay in school!!!

  2. I think that the dropout rate is high because the students dont care about their future and how they spend it. Most of the dropouts get put in jail, because they get involved with drugs and then are caught. If they were to stay in school they would be more likely to stay out of the drugs and be able to get a better job. Schools need to make smaller class sizes, so they can make sure that the students are listening and learning. I also think that schools should make the class more entertaining, so they would be entertained longer.

  3. I think that they dropout rate is so high because I think that the kids think that school doesn't matter and they just don't care anymore. As shown in the article they ask a girl why she is dropping out and she says " The teachers didn't care, and the students didn't care. Nobody cared so why should I." I think this is what a lot of the kids think.
If someone walked up and told me that they were going to dropout today I would tell them that they are throwing there life away. If you dropout of school you are throwing a whole bunch of money out of the window and ruining any plans of you getting a good job or even a job at all. I would also show them that the taxpayers are paying more then 8 billion dollars annually and that is $300 lost earnings every year. I would also tell them that many of the kids who dropout are likely to go to prison and that 60 percent of federal inmates are high school dropouts.
Overall I think that if you want to drop out you should think of your future and everything you are throwing away and how much money you will throw away.

  4. Today it seems like the dropout rate is higher than ever. About one out of every three students will drop out! I think there is many reasons for this and a big one is that some student's just don't care anymore. Schools across the country are trying to find ways to lower the dropout rate. One way that can help prevent students from dropping out is not cutting out teachers and fine arts programs like band and choir. We should keep teachers so they can have more one-on-one time with students and we should keep fine arts programs so students can become involved and look forward to something in the day. I know this won't completely solve the problem, but I think it could help lower the rate some. Plus they aren't the only one paying the price. A dropout will cost taxpayers about $292,000 over their lifetime. Many are realizing that this is a problem we need to fix, now is the time to start.

  5. I think the drop out rate is so high because in the big citys there is gangs and kids go in them and then they stop going to school and then they can no get there home work up to date and then they just say I am done with school and they drop out. Or they find a girl or boy friend and the girl or boy friend does not go to school an then he or she does what the boor girl does and that is not going to school. That is some reasons why They do not to school.
how Might the schools help to stop the drop out rate. They could tell them it is costing your parents and your family when you drop out. Or it is costing tax payers eight billion dollars when you drop out so if you do not what to wast you college income do not drop out it is that easy. That is what some scholl that has a lot of drop out might say.

  6. The dropout rate is so high because students don't care, and the teachers can't talk to all the students, and get them to care. Dropouts have a poverty rate of almost 31%, why would you want to live in poverty? No one wants to be nothing, everyone has dreams. As a little kid, there is always something you want to be. You don't just wake up one day saying, "I want to be nothing and live in a box when I grow up." Students don't have enough incentive to stay in school, they don't pay attention to what will happen in the future if they drop out now. If you are a student that graduated, you will essentially be paying for your classmates that didn't care, which means you have to work harder so your dropout classmates can do nothing, since they didn't graduate or care. If you are thinking about dropping out, consider what your choices of a job, not very good jobs, and nothing you will truly enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Because students are starting to not care about school. Teachers have a lot to do in this matter. The teachers are not caring like they used to be. They are just doing it for the money. So students figure if the teachers don't care why should they? If teachers could be more caring and do what they are paid to do, they're would be more kids staying in school. Another possible reason is that they have rough personal lives and just can't take being at school. But there are many possible reasons considering we lose 1 million students before graduation out of the 4 million that enter high school nationwide. So there are a lot of factors played in why a student may dropout. Hopefully the number changes drastically lower in the next few years.

  8. The drop out rate in high school substantial. I think the drop out rate is so high because some kids are careless. I also think that the rate is high because the classes are getting bigger. Teachers are being cut and that makes the classes bigger. Schools should add more teachers and staff so some students can have personal help and have it to themselves when they need it. Schools should also give prizes to the students for reaching a certain set goal. This would help students to keep going and have them work their hardest to do the best they can to be rewarded. I found it shocking that seven thousand students students in the United States a day! Which is every twenty six seconds. That to me is very sad. To learn that people drop out that often. What do they drop out for? For ten thousand dollar less earnings for their life time. For themselves to live in poverty? Why would you do that to yourself? I find these people who drop out ok but I don;t know why.

  9. There are many reasons people say our dropout rate is so high. Most of those are very good reasons, but when I think about it theres only 2 that comes to my mind that are huge. One being the teachers do not care about the students. The second is that their families don't care.
My first reason was that the teachers do not care, which is true in some parts but not Maquoketa Valley. In Philadelphia, they have the 6th largest school district and a third of their students are dropouts. Why do you think that is? That of course is they don't have enough teachers for the students. The students then think that their teachers don't care if they drop out of not.
Last huge reason that comes to me is their families do not care if they graduate high school. I think that if their parents dropped out of school, then their children are more likely to. Children will always take after their parents and that is why they need to be good role models.
So therefore, the people around them are the cause of these kids dropping out of high school. If no one care about me, I would want to go out and do whatever I want and don't go to school. Teachers and families are the biggest reasons that kids drop out of school.

  10. I think the dropout rate is so high because some schools end up losing money as the time goes on and because there are so many people that have changed their attitude about the way they want to learn. So many people have thought that school is just a waste of time and that they should just dropout because then they can do a lot more things and they think that it will be okay but it' really not. The more the people drop out the less jobs they will have and the less money they will have. Researchers have studied that a dropout will end up making taxpayers pay $292,000.

  11. The dropout rate is a big concern in the U.S. because there are more and more statistics stating that high school dropouts would be better off if they had a diploma. High school dropouts are more likely to be incarcerated by 63 percent! Also those with a high school degree make whopping $20,241 more on average than those without a degree. Too many people just don't care about their high school degree and how important it is through out life. At first living without a degree is probably no big deal, but within a matter of months it will get more and more difficult. More than likely, Getting a job will be very very hard to do. And getting your G.E.D. would be harder than just doing it right the first time. One out of every three students will dropout. I don't want to be that one. Do you?

    ReplyDelete
  12. In America, there are about 7,000 high school students that will drop out each day. That is a lot of students that didn't take the opportunity to further their education and potentially make more money when they are older and have a job. If they would have stayed in school, they would have an easier time trying to find a job, and an even better chance to find one with a high school diploma.
Annually, more than $8 billion is taken out of taxpayers pockets because of dropouts. The rate could be so high because the kids just don't care anymore. If their parents don't care, why should they? If they arn't getting the help from the teachers that they need, because the teachers don't have the time for them, how are they going to be able to get their grades up and have it worth their time? The teachers need to be able to help the students out whenever needed, but the students also need to try. They can't expect the teacher to do it all, the students need to be held accountable to get their work done, and try their best to listen and understand what is being taught.

  13. The dropout rate in the United States is one in every three student will dropout of school. It is a really high average because that is one third of the students that go into high school won't finish. There are a few ways that this problem could be fixed.
People dropping out doesn't happen as much in smaller schools but the rates are much higher in the bigger schools. I think the reason more people drop out in the bigger schools is because there are so many more students going to the same school. When the class sizes are bigger then it makes it harder to learn. In those bigger schools there are many students that aren't involved in as many activities and that makes it that much easier to say good bye to the school. When you are involved in a sport you aren't going to just drop out and leave your team. Your going to stay in school because you have something to stay for. Many students in the bigger schools don't have anything to stay for. That is a big problem.
Some ways to solve this problem with the dropouts is that class sizes need to be smaller so students can learn. There also needs to be something that every students can enjoy so they will have something to stay for. I think if these two ways of keeping students in school are realized many more students will stay in school.

  14. I think that the dropout rate is high because kids don't think anyone cares. That is not true because the whole entire nation does. They want us to be successful because we will run the country in our time. They want us to be smart and educated so we can prepare for the real world. In a CBS report, a girl comments that, "The teachers didn't care, the students didn't care. Nobody cared, so why should I?" That may be the issue or it could be one of the many more reasons for why they drop out. For example, maybe the kids are just being lazy and don't want to go to school in the morning or don't feel like homework. Or maybe it is because they get involved in things like drugs, gangs, and crimes. Or maybe they need jobs to help support their family and don't have time for school. There is endless questions about it.
Schools could maybe let kids know they care somehow by maybe rewarding them or by being joyful around the students and really help them out. Maybe give them the facts like on our paper and tell them how bad of a choice it is. Ask them what they want in life and tell them that if they want that, they have to graduate. Maybe if a teacher notices signs of a drop out, get someone to talk to them. We can stop it if we try!

  15. I think the dropout rate is so high because of the stress. School is hard for a lot of kids and they don't want to deal with it so they think the only other option is to dropout. When it said that 7,000 kids dropout each day or one dropout every 26 seconds, I didn't believe it. There has to be a reason for so many kids to do this. I think that is why they're dropping out. I think what schools need to do to lower the dropout rate is give the kids a break. I think what they need to have a half hour of class, and then a fifteen minute break in between each class. Three minutes between each class is not enough time to adjust. I think this would also help the kids concentrate on their work because if they get a break they'll be more enthusiastic about going to class, and not rushing to barely make it before the bell rings.

  16. Have you ever thought about how high school drop outs are? They say, "7,000 kids drop out every day, which is every 26 seconds, now that is pretty crazy if you ask me. Now I might not be the smartest kid,but i'm not going to drop out just because i'm a average student. Most of my friends I know are really smart, and well I guess i'm not up where they are, but most of them respect my smartness. I care about school, but the thing is, we have 8 classes, I think we should only have the basic stuff you need to known, English, Science, Math, History, and maybe even art. The other classes are nice, but 3 more classes can get to much for me. So i believe that they need attest 5 or 6 classes, and should end school at 2:00 PM. I believe in my own opine, and so should you, what are your options about dropping out?

  17. I think that the dropout rate is so high is because of the stress of homework and getting to much homework. Sometimes we dont have enough time or if the assignment is so large and needs to get done in a short amount time and we get stressed out because we have to work at it until late at night.
I think if schools want to lower the dropout rates they have to give some more time on the projects and have smaller clases so if you don't know what you are supposed to do you can ask and the teacher wouldn't be overwhelmed with homework. I think one reason people drop out and cost us money is because they don't have a job or don't get enough money to be able to live so they go out and commit crimes so they go to jail and wont have to pay for food and shelter and wont need a job because the taxpayers are paying for it all. Almost 60% of federal inmates are high school dropouts. Sometimes they just go and steal stuff and get arrested for their crime because they don't have enough money to but the item that they are stealing.

  18. There are many reasons that kids dropout of high-school. A lot of the time it is because they don't think that anyone will even notice that they are gone. They think that no-one cares about them. Even if the teachers might not have enough time to talk to you and help you out during class, they still care about you. They just have a lot of things to do. If you are even thinking about dropping out of high-school you should think twice. People who drop out of high-school earn $10,000 less than high-school graduates. Some kids are lazy and just don't want to go to school and do the homework, or getting picked on in school. For whatever reason it is, just ask a teacher or parent and they will help you out. Dropping out of high-school isn't a thing to be proud of, so don't do it!

  19. I think that they are high because they think they don't need school and that they can live on there own. When they drop out they could start doing drug and getting in big trouble and going to jail and costing the tax payers a lot of money. Another reason they may drop out is that they think the teachers don't care about them because they don't help them. But really the teacher really does care but she can't help everyone because there is so many of them.
The school could lower there students in one class room so the teacher can help everyone. They could not give as much homework. They could make the school year be fun and not all about just straight work. They could go out and find out what work really is and show them that they need school to work there.

  20. The drop out rate is sky rocketing all across the Untied State. Thirty years the United State led the world in high school graduation. We have been falling down fast among the rankings and now are ranked 18th among the industrial nations. I think the number of high school drop outs are so high is that we have to learn everything so fast. If you are in a big school it is a lot easier to fall a back in class. I think a way to slow down the class and give the teachers more time to teach there students is to have school years around. 7,000 students drop out a day, that is one dropout every 26 seconds. That needs to change and we need to make students see how important school really is.

  21. I think that the drop out rite is so now because kids cant get their school word done and they can't afford it. In the bIg cities there would be a bigger rites because there is so many more student and some of them can't afford it. I also think that way the drop our rite is so high because maybe that their parents was a drop out and maybe their parents do not care. It is also affecting our economy because it is costing us $8 million out of our tax money. I think one of the thinks that we can do to lower the drop out rite is to get the kids more involved with there school work and answer there questions. They need to think about there life and their future because drop outs get $10,386 less then the kids that graduated.

  22. I think the drop out rate is ridiculous for many different reasons.I havent heard many people saying anything about people who have dropped out or there saying there dropping out . 60% of students who drop out end up in prison. Students that dropped out and did not get there diploma make 10,000$ less the people who got there diploma and stayed in High school.7,000 students drop out every school day thats one drop out every 26 seconds and that seems like a very big number to me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the dropout rate is so high, because kids don't think anyone cares, but also because they don't care. They get involved with drugs and then the drugs overtake them, so they don't care anymore. People do care even if you feel they don't. You're parents care because they want you to have a good education so you can get a good paying job in the future. The teachers care or they wouldn't be a teacher. Your friends care because they encourage you to go out for sports and in order to do sports you have to keep good grades.
Paying for dropouts, because they are in jail or are getting assistance from the government, costs a lot of money that parents go out and work hard for to keep a house and get the needs for their family. It's like they have to pay for extra kids, but they don't even know them.
The schools could make classes a bit more interesting by having games or doing something that the kids would want to do. They schools could also talk to their kids and tell them that each and every student at the school is important even if the teacher doesn't always have time for them. These may be some ideas for teachers to start with to keep kids in school.

  24. The people that research how many kids drop out of school say that 7,000 students a day drop out and 1 million drop out every year.
I think that the drop out rate Is very high because some of the kids ned more help than others. Sometimes the kids and the kids parents are involved in drugs and some kids are getting bullied. When kids are doing bad in school they don't get help and then the teachers don't help them because there are so many students to take care of in the bigger schools. Teachers in the bigger schools need to figure out a way to help all students and to make class sizes smaller so that we don't have as many drop outs. The students that drop out cost the world and economies millions and billions or dollars every year. They cost taxpayer 8 billion a year. When the plan no child left behinds to really help schools and students, lets how we can change the number of money and dropouts

  25. I think the dropout rate is so high because the kids are getting into bad things like drugs and alchahol then getting caught and being taken to jail or prison. Then some don't go to school because they think they don't need it by the time they are in high school and then they can't get a good job. so they take welfare and food stamps wich cost us money.
to stop them from dropping out we should make sure kids don't have access to drugs and alchaol and we need to get it through their head that the whole USA cares that they get an education so they don't have to pay as high of a tax and so we can get our economy back to the way it was. We need to tell them that they should stay in school and make more money so we dont have to pay for things for them like food and so they don't live a life of poverty. In school if a teacher sees that a kid is not doing well they should help the kid and try to tell them the good things about school like that they will make about $10,000 more then if they dropout.

  26. In the United States today many students are dropping out of school. There is an average of 7,000 students dropping out each day. That is one student every 26 seconds. I think the dropout rate is so high because no one cares about school any more. No one wants to come to school because it is no fun. In the big cities the class sizes are huge. With so many kids in a classroom it would be hard to learn. Therefore, more and more kids tend to drop out.
I think the schools need to make kids want to come to school. They could do that by having competitions or games every now and then. They could also limit the homework. Not many kids like doing homework and if you only have a little bit of homework you won't dread doing it so much.In the big cities they should consider downsizing the number of students in each classroom. I think if school was a fun place to be there wouldn't be as many dropouts.

  27. The USA has a huge drop out rate. For every school day 7000 students drop out . That more than we have in our school. That is not a good thing because that cost all the others that pay taxes 292,000 over a life time and that is only one taxpayer. One reason they drop out of school is the kids that say that the teacher don't care they are wrong. The teacher is only one person and they can't can not help every one at once. The schools should make smaller classes so the teacher can help all the students. The school should not punish every one because they do there home work wrong and help them. The schools should tell the students how hard life is if you drop out. Like they would make 10,386 dollars a year then a person that graduated. That is some ideas that I have to help fix a very important subject. I hope that other have started to realize that dropping out of school is not good.

  28. There are many reasons why I think the dropout rate is so high. These days I think many people just shut down when they don't get something. They don't even try and don't act like they will ever try. Many kids might just say that no one cares, like Sarae, so they have a reason to dropout. I truth thought they don't even look at both sides of the story, they just shut down and don't want to deal with it. Remember back when you were in kindergarten and we got to play with paint, draw pictures, play with toys, or get candy for rewards? I think that is one reason why they want to drop out is because they don't want to listen or learn. They get bored. I know I get tired of sitting in a chair all day listening to teachers talking on hour after the next. Some days aren't bad because we do a group activity but when we don't, the day is really long. Many people may think they can make a life in jail. The rates are 63 times higher in dropouts to go to jail than to live life. So I think we need to make school fun but at the same time combine fun with learning what you need to learn. These are reasons why I think kids dropout and what we can do to help the dropping out rates.

  29. High schoolers dropping out of school is a big problem in our nation. The United States led the world in high school graduation thirty years ago, now we are ranked 18th.
The dropout rate is very high, especially in big cities, where class sizes are bigger. Every school day, 7,000 students drop out of high school. This amount of dropouts is very high, but why? Because the class sizes are bigger in big cities, students might not get the personal help that they need to succeed. They may think that nobody cares how they feel or what they do. Sometimes their lives at home aren't very good either, so they may not get the support that they need.
To prevent this huge number of dropouts, schools could try to make class sizes smaller, so that it will be easier for students to learn and ask questions if they need help. Schools could also prevent this number of dropouts by having the teachers teach, while also having fun with the students every once in a while.
Almost 60% of federal inmates are high school dropouts. If kids don't stay in school, they can get into bad things like drugs and alcohol because they can't find a job or they don't have anything else to do because they don't have an education to be able to pay for food and other necessities.
Some don't have places to live because they don't have a job, so they purposely create crime, just so they can have a place to live.
High school dropouts have a hard time living after they are out of high school because you can't get a good job without a high school diploma.

  30. My Name is David Boyles and I do not plan on dropping out of high school. If you drop out of high school there are so many things that will not go well for you. If you drop out you will be making $10,000 less a year if you hadn't dropped out and got your diploma. If you if don't drop out and go to college and get your bachelors you could be making $30,000 more a year. If you do drop out you can't get near as many job opportunities because they will pick people that have got their bachelor's degree before the people who did get their high school diploma, and then you will bet he last to get looked at fro the job. It's not worth it in the long run. The dropout rate is so high because the schools keep getting bigger and bigger school, and they start getting so big that the schools have to start firing teachers because they can't afford them all. The classes get bigger so the student aren't learning as much and if they need help they can't get it so nobody cares. They need to stop building so big and start getting teachers that care. They need to get teachers that will take the effort to help the students if they need the help.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that the dropout rates may be so high because of many different reasons, and there are a few ways to lower the dropout rate. There are people that don't think they are smart enough to stay in school. Sometimes they just don't like it and that dropping out is their best option, even though they could ask for help from many people. It is hard to believe that some people think that the teachers don't care if they stay in school, but in the bigger schools where there are nearly twice as many as here in one classroom at a time and the teacher has three or four classes to teach with different students it would be easy to get into your head that the teacher won't care if you don't ever show up again. There are just too many students to a few teachers and they may not know everyone's name on the spot, but it does matter to them if all of their students graduated. They may not have the support for them to stay in school at home, or their parents may just tell them that school is not worth the time and that they should dropout and save the family some money. Or the school staff doesn't take as much time to get to know the person and they just kind of ignore them and the student could take that as no body would care if they left. It is also hard to see that absolutely no one in their life cares about them being in school, but friends influence many peoples choices and if they hang out with people that do drugs and skip school then they are more likely to drop out.
There needs to be more of a positive attitude all around the school. There should be less students in a class, or more teachers, maybe even just more schools to even out the student numbers and letting the teachers a little break on how many students they have to watch in one class period.
One in every three students dropout, that is way too many. There should be none, everyone should get the chance to live with a good job and some money in their wallets. Not in jail or broke because they never graduated from high school.

  32. The drop out rate could surely be affected by a lot of different things, rather it be caring, environment, or just money. I don't think that students realize that when you drop out of highschool, you're just making things worse on yourself. 12% of the unemployed do not have higschool degrees. The reasons people drop out fluctuate from person to person. Here at maquoketa valley, teachers have a tendencies to care. I could ask any of my teachers for anything and i know they would be here to help me with anything that I needed. But at other schools things can be a lot different. Some teachers are just there to get paid, and student are there because they have to be, not because they want to be. The only way to lower the drop out way is to get students and teachers a like to care at an equal level. The classes are also huge, and nothing gets to be on a personal level like it is at MV. You don't have to be friends with everybody at MV, but you surely do know everybody. If you need any help to the side, a teacher WILL give it to you. Although there are many reasons people drop out, it can probably be solved with one simple solution. Make caring as big of a deal as learning.

  33. Why are the drop out rates so high is because I think that the kids in our bigger schools are more used to the environment were they are more laid-back and their parents don't really worry about them, they do worry and care about them but they don't really worry about what happens to their kids. On the other hand, the kids in our type of school and they are used to the teachers being there and caring rather than in bigger schools they don't pay attention to the kids, they are more just there to teach.I think if we had more teachers in the bigger schools the drop rates would be lower. I think that maybe they should consider focusing on bigger schools and helping the kids that think that they want to drop out and help they get more help.

  34. The dropout in the United States is very high. I think the dropout rate is very high because so many teenagers dont care about there future. All they want to do is do drugs and drink alcohol. They don't think how it's going to effect them in the long run.
I think That schools could drop the dropout rate by making smaller classes. Have a better teacher to student ratio so that the kids learn more and don't have an excuse to not get good grades and drop out. Students shouldn't have a chance to get bad grade or fail a class. They should not be able to have the choice to drop out of school even if they want to.
I think it is crazy that 30.8 percent of dropouts experiance poverty is a crazy statistic. Its their own falt for not staying in school. Its their own falt for not getting their degree.

  35. No one grows up dreaming of being a statistic. It's that simple, but still, every day 7,000 kids drop out of school across the nation, that's one out of every three students. Going to a small school where students dropping out is a rarity, it makes it hard to wrap my mind around the immense number of kids dropping out, but that doesn't mean I don't understand. Years ago, I went to a very nice, but very populated school district. Each year, starting in kindergarden, you're shoved into a new classroom full of kids you probably never talk to, or have even met. Without friends surrounding you all the time, it would be hard to find a reason to actually stick around. Also, with such large class sizes, teachers can't take the time to get to know you as an individual. Why bother to stay in class when you're not going to get called on or get a gold star on your paper?
Drop-outs are more than the school's fault. If you're impoverished, sometimes you have no choice but to quit school and get a job. Help feed your family or stay in a boring math class? I know which I would choose.
Things can change though. To me, drop-out problems boil all the way down to the core of our nation: the budget. Instead of pouring our funds into helping the poor, we could put money into the education and stop people from getting as poor. If we were to put money into the education system, we could afford more teachers in classes, more schools for overcrowding issues, and less dropouts.
Everyday, students are dropping out for numerous reasons, things can change, though. If radical change is needed, then let's bring radical change. It all starts with one more teacher, one less impoverished town, and a little hope.

  36. Did you ever think of dropping out of high school once? Sometimes everyone just wants to drop out because of a test or they don't like a subject, but think of what it will have in the long term. One of the reasons I think that drop out rate is so high because in the larger populated schools it is harder to communicate with the teachers. You also don't have as much help and as many chances as you do in smaller schools like us. If you fail a quiz usually our teachers let you retake it or they will help you get your grade back up. In the bigger schools you might not get the chance to retake it because the teachers have to many other kids to worry about. Teachers could try and get more help that doesn't cost much. They could get volunteers, but some of them might not have enough background to help them. If they hire more teachers then they will need to be payed and then other teachers will be fired because they don't have enough money to go around. So right now I don't think there is an absolutely good way to help the dropout rates.
One of every three students fails to graduate. That is huge! It also states that it was only the case for the sixth largest school, but that shouldn't be the case for them either. Every person in the U.S. should be able to graduate. The way it is going now it will almost impossible to get a job without a diploma. College people are having a hard time getting a job let alone someone without a diploma. If you are thinking about dropping out think about what you want to do in your future and how far you want to go with your life.

    ReplyDelete
  37. On average, every one in three students drop out of high school. In my opinion, I think the drop out rate is so high because many students feel like they don't get the attention that they think they deserve. This problem mainly occurs in the larger schools, not so much around our hometown area. In big cities, class sizes are practically doubled ours. Some students in the article talked about how the teachers and students do not care about this. This is not true. If teachers didn't care then they would not be there, trying to fill you with knowledge. With big class sizes, and the short school days. teachers don't have enough time in the day to help each student. Although they try their hardest, it just cannot happen. That is the advantage of small schools, everyone knows everyone. Teachers have time to spare, trying to help the students in need, they feel it is important for every student to pass their class.
So in order to lower the dropout rate, the teachers in schools that are larger could maybe focus on the struggling students. There are students in every class that feel if they get even a few more minutes of help from their teacher(s), than it can make a difference that will last a lifetime. This is why I think the drop out rates are so high in our nation, and what we can do about it.

  38. Students dropping out of high school has been a growing issue for some time. Every few years, the issue of dropping out surfaces in the news, and we need to take action. We need to do something about kids dropping out because they are our future. Our world depends on those kids that are dropping out. We can't give up on them. We are only as strong as our weakest players. These dropouts are our weakest players, and if we don't them, we will all fail. Our dropout rates are rapidly increasing. Why? Because our education funds are low. Teachers are being cut before our eyes, and the teachers that aren't being cut can't handle a 30 or 40 person class. They have to spend all their time helping kids that can't get caught up fast enough, so they can't help the kids that are overachieving learn to their potential. I believe that some teachers become detached because they are under enough stress; they aren't going to waste their time on kids that don't care. They don't have to worry about the kids that do care because they care about school and want to learn. They think that potential dropouts are like winning a losing battle. If they are going to drop out, what is a teacher going to do to change their mind? What can we do to stop this issue? I think that we need to get more education funds because education helps our kids..the future learn as much as they can. Education is a major building block of our society, and we need to keep
our future as good as possible. With more education funds, we can hire more teachers so they can help in classes, or we can build more schools and hire more teachers. They would both be beneficial, and that's what we need. Dropouts will make $36,424 less than someone who graduates high school and college with a bachelor's degree. That much money can change a life. If everyone got a bachelor's degree, the world and our economy would be in so much better shape. We need kids to stay in school because they are our future.

That is how much an average high school drop-out makes a year. This is $10,386 less than an average high school graduate gets with a diploma. This is $36,424 less then the average high school graduate gets with a diploma and bachelor degree. This is too much money going to waste because students are dropping out of school. What is the main reason people drop out?
I believe that students drop-out because either A: they don't know what they are going to do after high school, B: they don't care about school at all so they waited until they could legally drop-out. Big schools have more drop-outs than smaller schools. Maybe students in Cedar Rapids are dropping because they don't like their teachers, or perhaps they don't like the class sizes.
$292,000 is how much us tax payers pay to help out these drop-outs. Why should we have to pay for their butts to drop-out? It's not fair, is it? Maybe people should suck it up and stay in school.
Yes, I understand that there are those who cannot afford school. They have a reason to drop-out. The least you could do is get home schooled, or teach yourself. This way you can still get an education.

  40. Highs school drop outs are on the rise. There could be many reasons that this is happening, one could be because the area they live in. Or the people that they know or the level of caring the teachers and their school friends. Some people dont have any friends to talk to or a teacher they can ask for help or a parent they can count on. Their home lives can play a big part on their school and if they drop out or not. Dropping out can result in many outcomes like being a druggy for the rest of your life or having a bad reputation by doing things to get by or get money to stay alive. Most people that drop out os school end up in jail or having no money and have to be a hobo. 1 in 3 people drop out of school.

  41. Every twenty six seconds there is one dropout in High school. Would you repeat that to yourself, this means that 7,000 kids in one school day that dropout. Why? Why, what is happening to our country?
Almost half of all students in the country's largest school districts fail to get a high school diploma. What goes through the minds of the students that choose that option to dropout of High school. I think the whole reason that this is happening is because of the parents. These are not the kids with good family backgrounds most of these kids are those who would be stereotyped into getting into crime. Parents don't care anymore, they don't care about their kids and that is the reason why those students self esteem goes way down because they don't have support at school or when they come home, they have nothing. Parents have to have a good relationship with their child and if they do then they will know when their kids are getting bullied and pushed to their limit. They will know why they are getting into trouble and on the verge of breaking and giving up, and in this case, school. But because the parents don't care and don't have that relationship with with their child then these statistics wont have to be this high.
One little problem could fix the numbers of statistics. Maybe a little push and a little caring could change the way teens would think about that next step of dropping out.

    1. The reason why i think high school drop out rates are so low is because kids do drugs or there parents don't care. Every 26 seconds of a school day a person drop out. Many students parents may not care and let them do what they want. The USA used to be the top of the graduation but now we rank 18th of the world. They should make class rooms smaller so students will get more attention. I think more people should graduate' and parents should step up.

  42. In the United States many high-school students are dropping out of school. For every 26 seconds in a day, an average of one student drops out of school. This is a huge problem for our country.
I don't think students dropping out of school is as big of a problem in rural areas like where we go to school, but it is a huge problem in the bigger cities. I think it's a problem in these bigger cities because of the environment these kids live in. These kids see the lives of some people around them, and they think that's what their life will be like. They don't think that there is a chance for them to be successful in life because of where they come from, so they don't see of any reason to try in school, or let alone be in school.
I think that the dropout rate would lower if the students had people take an interest in their lives and actually care about them doing well in school. This responsibility is on the student's teachers, family members, and their other classmates. I know it is tough for teachers to give all of their students attention when they have such large class sizes in the bigger cities, but then schools should hire more teachers.
The most surprising fact to me is that an average of one student drops out of school for every 26 seconds. It's crazy to think that while sitting here writing this blog that ten students could have dropped out of high-school and thrown away their future. I think the amount of high-school dropouts needs to decrease drastically, and the country should work on keeping these students in school.

  43. The rate of high school dropouts is very high. Why is this? I believe this because they start to not care. They think school is a waste of time and they give up. They don't think it is needed. They might think they are too cool to be in school.
They are wrong. Of the people jobless, 12 percent have not graduated high school. People who don't go to college have a hard time finding a good job. It is even worse when you are a high school dropout. If they do get a job, they tend to earn $10,386 less than someone who does graduate high school and $36,424 less than someone that has a bachelor's degree.
People also think they are too cool for school. They think they don't need it. They decide other things are cooler than school so they drop out to do them. Most of the time, it seems like the things people think are cool end them up involved in a crime.
I think that schools could do some to help the problem but it is more of their whole environment. They need to make the environment more fun so they don't mind being there. They also need to make it so they get the help they need. One reason I forgot was people need help, but they don't get it and decide to drop out. They need to make sure they can all get the help they need even if they don't ask because some are too independent or stubborn. Schools can do little things like that to prevent it more.
This is all my opinion. It may not be right, but this is how I see and the solutions I see. High school students don’t listen to the consequences and then, if they decide to drop out, they see them for themselves. This is why the high school dropout rate is high.

  44. I think the dropout rates are so high because some teachers and students just dont care. Some teachers don't like there job which makes it harder for the students to learn and achive in life. Why would you drop out? Waste almost 13 years of going to school just to drop out when your almost done? That's dumb, how are you going to support your family when you can only get a job at McDonalds because you don't have your highschool diploma. People that drop out lose more then $10,000 in there annual income. Almost 60% of highschool dropouts go to federal prison, Do you want your children going to prison? Make sure they do there homework, pay more attention to them, maybe they will try harded. If students are in a good enviroment then there is a less chance they will drop out. I think if students were put in smaller schools they wouldn’t drop out.

  45. High school dropouts are an important issue. As of recently, there have been many stories in the news about the astonishing nationwide statistic that just keeps rising: 1 in 3 students will drop out of high school.
There are many reasons a person may drop out of school. They could be working a job or two and not have time for school. Personally, though, I think the dropouts are because the high schoolers feel as though nobody cares. Even in our article, one girl said she dropped out because "Nobody Cared." Though the students think nobody cares, they have to realize in bigger schools it is hard for a teacher to truly care for a student and give them all attention they feel they deserve when there are classes of 40 students.
I think to lower this intensely high rate, someone has to make the kids understand the full extent of their situation. It’s not a matter of helping the students see it, it’s a matter of making them see it. They need to see that their teachers really try, but there are so many kids in the room that making every single person feel important is impossible. Also, I know teachers are already super devoted, but I think they should start a weekend or after school study hall sort of thing for students who need extra attention, or who feel like they aren’t getting the caring aspect from anyone around them.
Either way, I know something has to happen, and obviously so does the media if they keep putting it in the news. Someone needs to open the eyes of these high schoolers, to keep them from becoming a high school dropout statistic.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The drop out rate is very high. There are many reasons for people to drop out, and many people wish to stop it.
I think that there are several reason that high school students drop out of school. I think that one reason is the home environment. Some parents are so loving and caring, and they would do anything to make sure that their child is happy. Other parents on the other hand, don't care. They don't have a good job or money to support their children. They smoke or drink, and they don't care. This behavior passes onto the children. The children then don't care, and they start to be the same as their parents. The parents don't care enough to make their kids graduate, so they don''t.
Another reason that I think kids drop out is because some teacher don't care. They don't have the time to care for the students, so they don't. It doesn't matter to them if the students graduate or not, because it doesn't effect them. They have better things to do than to care for other people than themselves. It is sad, but it is true. No, it's not most teachers, but some are like that.
An additional explanation for the drop out rate being so high is that the kids just don't care. They don't enjoy or like school, so why be there? They have no motivation to keep themselves in school. They are still too young know the consequences of dropping out, and they don't know any better. They might even think that it is the cool thing to do.
The drop out rate might be so high because of the large class sizes. The teachers can't get to all of the students, which leads the students to believe that nobody cares. They don't get the attention that they need, so they think they should drop out. Many classes are so big that the teacher has no way of getting to all of the students in one day.
To prevent kids from dropping out, I think that class sizes in bigger schools needs to get smaller. There needs to be more teachers for the students, so that they get the attention that they need. Yes, this is very hard because of money. We have to pay these extra teachers, but schools don't have the money for it. You could also talk to the parents, and ask them to talk to their kids about dropping out. Ask them to make sure the should knows the consequences, and what they will have to go through. You could maybe try teaching it in a class. Pick one teacher to teach her students the consequences of dropping our. This might make kids think twice about their decision.
I think that the drop out rate is too high, and we should so something about it. It would be hard, but if we all try, I think we can help a lot of people, and save them a lot of money.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think the dropout rate is so high because kids feel like nobody cares. They may feel like this because they may go to a school where there is six-hundred to one thousand kids in their class. Can you imagine that? We are lucky to have a small school with only sixty students in the freshman class. In those schools with class sizes that are huge, you see a ton of dropouts. The students may feel like they aren't getting enough attention from their teachers.
We all know that the education budget isn't very big, and we are letting go of good teachers everyday because of it. There may not be a way help the budget get bigger, but maybe if we had teachers that would like to "volunteer teach," or teach to kids in school districts without being paid, then we would be saving money and the budget could get bigger gradually. If there were more teachers in on classroom then the students may feel like they are getting more attention and wouldn't feel the need to dropout. I know that most of us Americans are greedy and probably wouldn't go along with a "volunteer teaching" program, but if we would think about money and how much we are getting paid, then maybe our society could be a whole lot better. I think school should try a volunteer teaching program and see if it works for the students. If the school is having less dropouts, then maybe they should continue it and introduce it to other schools with an even higher dropout rate.
I'm sure the government has thought that putting more schools up in the same district would help the dropout rate, but I don't think so. If we put more schools up in the same district then there could be more students going to one school than the other. This could lead to closing down schools, because schools have to have a certain amount of students to stay open. If they don't they will have to shut down, which leads to those students going to a new school. They may not like this new school because of the teachers, students, and many other reasons. This is all going to lead to more students dropping out. If we put more schools up in the same district, then they should think about making the class sizes closer to the same size. To do this they should spread out the students to other schools in the district. We did that here at Maquoketa Valley and it has helped us even out the class sizes. Before doing that the classes in Hopkinton were way smaller than what Delhi and Earlville had in their classrooms. I think this would help some students if they were struggling, but they may not like the teachers or students. This may also lead to more students dropping out.
Some of these things may help the dropout rate, but hey also may hurt it. There may not be a way to stop the dropout rate from going up or going down. We can always hope for the best and do everything humanly possible to help it go down.

    ReplyDelete
  48. At the moment dropping out can seem to be the easy way out and the good decision at the time. Some school even encourage kids that aren't smart to drop out and get there GED somewhere else so there grades don't effect the schools grade rate.
The thing is that a lot of kids don't realize that they will lose about $10,000 dollars a year compared to if they would have graduated. That is almost $28 dollars a day extra you could of had if you would have graduated from high school. It makes for a better way of life and it gives you the decision if you want to goto college. It also effects a lot of other people. If your not earning a lot then you don't pay very much in taxes which means the Government doesn't get to take as much of your money, which can be good for you but that means they just have to borrow that much more from China.
So dropping out hurts you and you might not notice it but in the end over a life time you will have lost $620,000 dollars not that might change your mind.

  49. The definition of a high school dropout is a person who abandons a course of study. The number of students that drop out are more than likely to be smaller than the 1990s. Back then there were so many more dropouts than today 2012. In my words people who drop out usually have no ambition to graduate. Why would a bright student dropout when they could easily be getting a scholorship? These are the kind of students who will not drop out, because they have something to look forward to in the future. The percentage of how many people drop out has lowered extremely, but is still outstanding with one student dropping out every twenty six seconds, throughout the nation. The reasons that there are some many dropouts is also because some students don't get the attention from the teachers or feel the teachers do not do anything to help, or some think that high school isn't doing anything for them. A dropout from an average high school student will cost a payment of $292,000 that taxpayers have to pay over a lifetime. This is nothing to say its okay and to think it's not going to hurt anyone. It will hurt the school, yourself, and your whole entire future. There will be no bright future if you don't have high school diploma.

  50. Poverty. 30.8 percent is the poverty rate of high-school dropouts. That is over TWICE as likeliness for poverty than people who graduate from college! I couldn't imagine what would cause so many dropouts in the first place, but now I can think of some reasons behind it.
Reason number 1: Money. Plain and simple, some people just need money-for their families, their friends, or even for their own survival. Sometimes school has to be dropped for those people to go out and to make a living.
Reason number 2: Big schools. Larger schools may have a bad affect on students with low self-esteem or low confidence because they feel as if they are literally one in a million students, and no one cares specifically about their education. What they don't know is that their own friends and parents care. And THEY themselves should care, education is key to your entire future.
There is not much schools can do to lower the dropping out rate, seeing how low the education funds are currently, but I do believe that fantastic teachers should know how to build a great relationship with all of their students. This may be harder in bigger schools, but they could try by addressing them as less of one big group, but more as one big group of individuals. Hopefully, this problem can become less of a statistic and more of an area that needs improvement. Kids shouldn’t have to drop out of school and sacrifice their education for any reason at all.

  51. Twelve percent of all unemployed didn't have a high diploma. The drop out rate is so high and I think it is like this because the big schools have so many students in one class and there is only one teacher. This would be very hard for the teacher knowing that they couldn't help everyone that was needing help but also hard for the students that are doing good but don't think that anybody cares so they don't think that they should care. I think that they should employ more teachers so that the kids will have more help to pay attention to all of the students.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Why do I think the dropout rate is so high? I think that the dropout rate is so high is because unlike 30 or 50 years ago, kids are starting to care less and less as the years go by. There's always going to be those students that are madly determined to graduate and get on with their lives. For me example, I have my whole future planned out. I know what college I'm going to, what I want to major in, and where I will be living during my college years. I'm not saying that all students are going to know that information as a Freshman, but some do. Eventually they are going to have to figure it out.
One of the reasons why they might care less and less is because maybe they feel that the people around them don't care. This might press on to, 'If they don't care, why should I?' I really wish that these kinds of kids would care. I don't think that some of them realize at the time, that if they drop out they throw away so many important things and so many paths that they could go on to start their life. If they don't graduate, they have a lesser chance of getting a job of those who have high school diplomas. They also can't apply for colleges. Even if they wanted to apply for a job (which is highly possible and most likely to happen) they still don't get the guarantee of those who stuck out throw high school and graduated. Statistics say that high school dropouts earn $10,000 less a year than workers with diplomas. Those are just the people with diplomas! These do not include the people with bachelor's degrees and successful careers. These are just the people with diplomas.
What might schools do to lower the dropout rate? Some students may say that 'people don't care' is what causes them to drop out. Some may say that they can't afford school because their parent's decided to do bad things. I think that some schools could solve this by reaching out to their students more. In smaller schools this is much easier than the larger schools in the city. High School Dropouts are becoming a huge problem in our country and we need to find a solution fast before this is too much in control where we cannot solve it at all.

  53. The reasons why I think that people drop out of school. All the teachers play favorites like they let this kid go without showing her an assessment but the other kids can't talk. Then the kids start to hate that class more and more. So then they start to skip that class during school. Then they figure out that skipping that class it pretty Good. So then they just one-hundred percent just drop out. Then they live on the streets and live a terrible life all because one teacher hated them and pointed out all there wrong doings but did not help them. Well she helped they one other student that she liked. 60% of all inmates are high school drop outs.
