Goal Setting

“You need a plan to build a house. To build a life, it is even more important to have a plan or goal.” – Zig Ziglar

So why should I set goals?
1)  Goals give you something to aim for.  Basically it's like you are involved in archery.  You know that you want to get a bullseye on the target.  Setting goals gives you a purpose for doing things.
2)  Goals builds motivation, confidence, desire, and persistence.  If we want to hit that bullseye, we will continue to practice until we can get it.  Once we get closer to the center, our confidence builds as does our desire.
3)  Goals provide the roadmap to success.  This map  guides us from where we are today to where we want to be later.

We will be writing SMART goals today.
S - SPECIFIC (example: yes, get in shape is a goal but you need to be more specific - join a gym and will work
out for at least 30 minutes three times a week.)
M - MEASURABLE (in other words how will I know I've accomplished the goal?)
A - ATTAINABLE (think about who can help you or what you specifically will need to do to attain it.)
R - REALISTIC (you must be willing to do this and know that you are able to dedicate yourself to it.)
T - TIMELY (when do you want to have the goal achieved by?  It needs to be in a timely manner.)

Think about this class.  What are two goals you have for this class?  Remember to be specific; I don't want "to pass the class."  This is a weak goal.  Dig deep into what worries you may have.  Use these to guide you in your goal setting.  Complete the chart for each goal.

Mrs. DeVore's Goal for English
1.  My goal is to read at least 10 minutes each day to increase my knowledge and share my enthusiasm with others.  Obviously the time is set at a minimum of 10 minutes which is an obvious measurement, but I can also measure this by the conversations I have with my colleagues as well as my students.  I hope to join the teacher book club that will begin sometime this school year which will allow me to grow in professional reading.  These teachers will help push me to think about other ideas with teaching and helping students.  Though I feel this goal could be difficult on nights where I have multiple essays, blogs, and projects to grade, I know that it is a betterment to myself so it is worthy.  I will try this for one semester.

  1. My goal for this semester is to keep track of my work and get it all done. I will track the progress by using power school. Also use the website and the back board to check if there is anything I didn't get done. My other goal is to speak in front of people also.

  2. My goals are to try to read more and talk in front of the class. You will see me the the study hall home reading and see me with a different book many times and also go in front of the class and talk. It can help my parents because then they do nit have to tell me to read, and it can also help me then I am not scared do talk in front of the class.I hope to have it done byt eh end of the year.

  3. Kristin's Goals for English
    1. My goal for this semester is to work hard at speaking, in front of people and in general. I want to participate in conversations in class and present better. I could start by talking in front of a group of friends, and they can help me. I will know if I'm getting better if I am more willing to speak in front of people. Even though I don't really want to, I know it is important.
    2. Another goal I have is to continue reading. I would like to get about 15 books read this year. It can be hard with all the homework and chores, but I know I can do it. I want to keep track of all the books I read and what they are about. I will have to work hard to get my other work done so I have time to read. As long as I find a good book, I will be able to read it as fast as I can.

  4. My goal this year is I want to try and get straight A's. Work at school a little bit harder than I do right now. Pay more attention in class everyday, and study the material i need to know. If I work harder and get better grades it will help throughout my whole career.
My other goal is to be a better writer in all of my classes. I feel that I am not a very good writer right now so if I read some more books, or read some other peoples papers then I can see all the different kinds of writing that I could use. I want to achieve this goal by the end of the year.

  5. 1)My goal is to manage my time better so I have more time to be with friends and family and have more time to read. Two of the steps I can take to work on this goal is to make a playlist for my iPod so I'm not searching for a song I like and making sure I don't let distractions slow me down. I chose this goal because nobody likes being stuck doing their homework all night. I will be able to tell if I am accomplishing this goal or not by seeing how much more free time I have. I plan to improve throughout the school year.
2)My big goal for this year is to become a better public speaker. I plan on doing this by practicing my speech multiple times before presenting it. I also am going to present it to a friend or two so we can tell each other tips to improve our presentations. I know I need a lot of work on this looking back on my eight grade national park presentation. I plan on having my presentation skills greatly improved by the end of the semester and even better by the end of this year.

  6. My goal for this semester and maybe this whole year is to gain confidence to talk in front of people! Talking in front of people makes me nervous and my speech can become rushed or not understood. I hope by doing projects and talking in front of the class will help. This goal will help me in the long run. The more I get used to doing it, the better I will become. It will help me with any project, not just in the class. I know that this will help me all through high school and college and even after college when I want to pursue a job as a teacher!

My second goal is to become a better writer! I'm hoping to achieve this goal by the end of this year! I am not very creative when it comes to writing. I think my stories are boring... I hope by learning to do that that I will feel like i want to keep writing stories. By reading other peoples stories I may learn some helpful ideas. By reading more books I may or may not increase my knowledge, but I could use bigger words in my stories to make people wonder what they mean or to help them learn new words!

  7. My goal is to become a better speaker in front of people, and have more enthusiasm when I read. I want to become more comfortable in front of people with speeches and presentations. I don't like geting up in front of people, but I will have to get used to it as I do it more often.
My other goal is to become a better writer. I want to get better at the different points, and introductions. I will try to get better at the introductions and stating the points that I am trying to make. I will have other's read my writing, and see if I am getting any better, so they can help me.

  8. My goal for English is to pass the class with better than a C grade. Each quarter I want to get a better grade than the last. I am going to do my best on each assignment to help me get to my goal

  9. 1.) My goal for this school year is to have more self confidence in handing in work, or being truly proud of not only writing assignments but the work I put into them and how I hold myself when is comes to school. I want to be happy when I come to school not scared for class or seeing the grades on my writing assignments.
2.) I need to read more so my goal for this semester is to read and finish a book every week to week and a half. I need to better my reading ability and how often I read. I have to make time to sit down and read, and develop skills to be able to enjoy reading a difficult book.

  10. My goal for this year is to get straight A's. I want to do this so that I can get into a good college and get a good job. That means that I will have to study whenever I have free time and really pay attention in class. This will take a lot of time and I think my sister will have to help me on some things because she is older and knows more then I do.
My second goal for this semester is not being afraid of talking in front of people. I am fine talking to people that are my friends and family, but when I get in front of the class just freeze up. I am doing this because I am going to be in Speech and that is about talking in front of people and not being scared. So in class I am going to try to not be afraid of talking in front of the class.

  11. My Goal it to get A's and B's on every project test and quiz this semester. I will work harder for these grades and take my time. I will make sure that I know every thing about the project and test to do my best. My other goal is to be able to have better hand writing. To do that I will try all year. I know I will need to concentrate to be able to do that but I know I can do that. I hope to notice better hand writing by the second semester but even if it is better I will keep working at it.

  12. My first goal for this year in English, is to widely improve my vocabulary skills along with my speaking and constructive criticism towards others' projects and papers. I want to try to improve my speaking skills because i often get very nervous when I am in front of a lot of people. My second goal is to learn as much about English class as I can, so I am able to get good grades on my everyday work, quizzes, and upcoming tests. I would like to achieve and work at this goal before the end of this year, and also the rest of my high school carrear.

  13. My goal is to get better at English and try my hardest on everything I do this semester. I want to get good grades on all of my assignments and the only way to do that is to try my hardest using everything I know and everything I learn this year. If accomplish this goal my grade should show that i worked hard.
Another goal of mine is that would like to become better at writing papers. I can work on many different papers and then i will be better at writing. I want to take the whole year to become better at writing and I will know how I have gotten better by looking at how good my papers are at the end of the year.

  14. Hello fellow classmates. My goal as a Freshman is to become a better speaker in front of a group of people by practicing in English class. I want to achieve this goal by the time ninth grade is over. My second goal is to improve with my writing skills as a student. I would like to make my writing and spelling better than it is so it sounds nice and like it was out of the book. I can accomplish this goal by using my imagination while I write and add more excitement to my peices!

  15. My goal for freshman year is to pass the year with good grades, specially English. I need more confidence in speaking, so i will try hard to pay attention. I will try very hard to get good grades. I don't like to get bad grades, because it makes me look bad, and I don't like that. Another goal is to fit in, if i can't fit into high school, well I guess I will try harder! Friends don't come easily, so you have to work really hard to get friends. Some people can get friends just like that, which kinda makes me mad, because i have to work on it, but it's life i guess. This year I will succeed, and nothing will get in my way!

  16. My goal is to get an A in English all year. I will try to do my best on all of the assignments. I will try to turn in all of my assignments on time when they are due. Also, to do good on my work I will have to try to pay attention in class.
My second goal is to improve my handwriting. My handwriting is horrible right now. If I improve on my handwriting it will make it easier for people to read. Also, it will make my papers more neat when checking it over.

  17. My goal is to become a better speaker in front of crowds of people so i can talk. The people who help me in this would be my class mates and people around school. The way it would help is to be in a class where we have to talk in front of class for the grade. I would like to be able to do this before the end of freshmen year. And my second thing I would want to improve would be getting better grades so that I can get the job that I want. I would like to complete this goal by the end of high school. I think the people that would help me the most would be the teachers.

  18. My goal in English is to get an A. I will work harder on my homework. I will also try to participating more. I would also like to get better at speaking in front of people. I think if it does i will do better in English.
I would also like to improve my handwriting. I suck at writing so i want to improve on it.

  19. My goal this year is to get straight A's in all of my classes for the whole year. The only way to do that is to try my hardest on assignments and tests. I will work hard on my papers and if i have questions I will ask a friend or a teacher for help. Another goal is that I want to get better at talking infront of the class and not be so nervous. I could fix that by talking infront of them more, or just in a small group, working my way up.

  20. My goal this year is to read the rest of the Sarah Dessen books. I would like to read all of them by the time are freshman year is over. In order to get there I will read two or three books a quarter. This year I would also like to become more confident speaking in front of a body of people. This is one of my biggest weakness and I would like to overcome it. In saying that I am strongly considering going out for speech. These are my goals for this year.

  21. 1. My goal this year as a Freshman is to get good grades all year. Grades are a really big part of high school. You have to get good grades to get into the colleges that you want to get into. Colleges look at your grades from all four years of high school. This goal is going to be a hard goal to get because it is over a four year window. So I will have to come into class everyday and try my best in every class that I have so I will be able to get good grades in that class.
    2. Another goal that I am going to set for myself this year is to be able to get in front of the class and have a speech. I have never been that good at reading in front of the class. This is a hard goal for me and i will have to work at it to over come this goal. So I will practice all my speech in head of time so I know everything to do.

  22. One of my goals for ninth grade is to get better at speaking in front of large groups of people. I am going to do this by getting more active in my classes and talking to more people. English class will also help, like when we do speeches. Another goal that I want to accomplish in freshmen year is that I would like to read at least five books per semester. I am going to try to fit in fifteen minutes or more per day to help me reach this goal. I want to have my goals accomplished by the end of freshmen year or before if I can.

  23. 1. Hello everyone, I am a Freshman and my goal is to read at least 10 pages in my book everyday to make it much easier to get done for the end of the semester book. I will put a piece of paper every 10 pages in my book and read to the paper and take one out each day. It will make for a better end of the semester book project.
    2. My second goal is to teach myself how to write better. I always just kinda scribble down what I am writing because I am in a hurry. To make myself a better writer I am going to slow down and take my time on all my homework and projects. In the end it will make it easier for the teachers to read and make me feel good about how I write.

  24. I want to able to be able to write neatly. The reason why is because when I apply for a job i have to write it neatly. If i dont, I most likely won't get the job. My second gaol is to be able to read more often.I try to read a book but I get bored with it after a while.I want to be able to find a book and read it before i get a new one.

My other goal is to get good at writing essays. Hopefully I'll be good at writing papers by the end of the year. I also want to get better with my grammer and spelling in the essays. If I do all these and work hard at it all year I will accomplish my goals.

My second goal is to be able to read and stay interested in a book and not drift of. I have troubles starting a book and reading it from start to finish. There are books i can do that with but very few of them i can do that with. The only reason i cant is because i loose intrest in the book

  31. My goal is to become better at speaking in front of the class. I want to complete this goal by the end of my freshmen year. I want to be more comfortable speaking infront of others. My other goal is to get a B or higher in all my classes for the end of the semister. I can complete this goal by asking the teachers questions and getting my assignments turned in on time.cI can also check my grades and ask the teachers if I can make up points by doing extra work if I need to.

  32. My first goal durring English is to be better at speaking infront of other people. For my second goal, I also want to get a A's and B's through out this school year. I want to be able to talk in front of people so I can be more confident and then I dont have to worry about messing up as much. I also want to get all A's and B's because education is important to be because I want to be able to go to collage. If I learn how to speak infront of people better it will help me in the future also in collage for example and i will also get better grades now and in the future.

  33. My goals are to be better at speaking in front of the class and to read more books that I like. I want to be better at speaking in front of people by not saying um and repeating words all the time. To do that I need to practice and get use to it. I will be able to tell when I am not as nervous or am excited to talk in front of anyone. I want to have that accomplished in the next year or two. I also want to read more books. I only read a few I liked last year. I need to make time to read every night so I can accomplish this goal. I could read for 30 minutes after I am done with homework. I will keep track of the books I read like I did last year and compare. I can also choose better books.

  34. My goals are to be able to speak infront of a class better and i want to be able to do this by the end of the year and i want tp keep all A's and B's in my grades. i can do this by asking questions and turning all work in on time and doing it well.

  35. My goal is to keep all of my grades at 'A's. I want to complete this goal by finishing my homework and turning it in on time. I will pay more attention in class and be more active in the classroom. I will become a better leader, and a better learner.
One other goal is to stay out of drama and stay away from those i don't like. I will complete this goal by surrounding myself with positive people with positive attitudes. I will stay away from people who drop out or do bad things.

  36. My goal is to be a better writer. I always use different time periods in whatever I am writing. I want to complete this goal by the end of my freshmen year, and also to stick with it and remember what I have leaned and not to forget it. I also want to set a goal of speaking in front of the class. I want to stop being afraid and nervous when I talk and being more confident up in front of people since I never like being in front of people. I want to complete this goal also by the end of my freshmen year.

  37. My goal is to become better at English skills. This includes talking in front of the class. I would also like to become more creative when writing. I sometimes rush through assignments, so another goal is to take my time and do my best. Achieving these goals will help me in many ways during school.

  38. My goal is to obtain a 4.0 for my freshman year, and in all four years of my high school career. I know that this will not be easy, but I will check my grades every week to make sure that I am keeping my grades up. I will have parents, teachers, siblings, friends to support me, but I fully understand that nobody can push me as hard as I can push myself. If I need more help, I will contact teachers to help me, but I know it is all up to me to accomplish this task. I understand that this will be extra difficult when I have lots of homework, projects, and extra curricular activities, but I am ready to get stronger from the challenges that I will face. I want to accomplish this task to better myself, get into a good college, and look back in ten or fifteen years and be proud of myself and my grades. My grades are very important to me, and I have a lot of pride in them. It will take a great effort, but I am ready to work for it!

  39. My first goal this year is to read more. I really enjoy reading, but I really haven't done much this summer. In fact, I honestly don't think I touched a book the entire summer. My second goal is to improve my vocabulary because I sometimes can't understand what my friends are saying. I hang out with some very smart people with extremely large vocabulary spans, and I really would like to understand them sometimes. I know these goals, like any others, will take a while to reach, but I would really like to get a good start on them as soon as possible!! :D

  40. When I think of things I want to improve in, I definitely think of writing. I enjoy writing as is but I would like to be a more descriptive, entertaining writer. Obviously, I need to write to be a better writer. I'll write at least twice a week for over 15 minutes. Having friends, family, and teachers critique my writing will help help me improve, and I hope to have this accomplished after three weeks of this and keep improving from there. My second goal is also important for me. I would really like to improve my public speaking skills. I enjoy public speaking but I get a lot of nerves when I know I have to talk in front of a crowd. Any and all people could help by simply listening and I would like to improve by the time Speech comes around. I can practice speaking to a wall and put myself in situations that include talking to larger groups of people for at least 5 minutes a day a couple days a week.

  41. My goal this year is to overcome my fear of not being able to speak infront of large crowds. I want to be comfortable giving speeches, presenting projects, and anything else that involves this particular subject. Also, I want to be more broad on my reading selections. I read a lot of the same books, so I want to branch out more in what I read. These conclude my two Freshman year goals.

  42. I want to be able to talk in front of my classmates without being nervous by the end of the school year. I want to be able to talk to my teachers about assignments and extra credit by the end of the school year.

  43. My goal this year for English 9 is to improve my writing techniques. When I write I am going to use more vocabulary and descriptive words. I am going to put very compact sentences together and make all of my pieces flow together. Along with writing a good piece, I want to express that really excellent piece of writing by being comfortable when I do all of my presentations. I want to make my presentations exciting and fun to listen to. I can check myself if I am reaching up to my goal by checking my grades. If I have improving grades or grades that are already at the top, I know that I am doing a good job and reaching my goals that I set for myself.

  44. My goals this semester is to become a better reader. Reading seems to give you more knowledge, so it's what could make me become better at learning and listening. I need a good book to make myself read, and help me create things in my mind that I've never really had the talent to do so before. I plan on before I go to sleep every night this first semester to choose a good book to satisfy me. This will be at least 10 minutes every night, in which will then slowly help progress me into expanding my vocabulary and knowledge.

  45. One of my goals is to speak in front of my class at least once a week and not be nervous. I don't like being in front of people so I would like to get better at it. I can measure it by my grade that I get for speaking in front of the class. I will need to do this a lot to be able to be comfortable with it. My teachers can help me with this by letting me talk in class. This is a reasonable goal because with eight classes a day I should be able to talk in class at least once. I would like to accomplish this by the end of my freshman year. My second goal is to write my essays/papers longer and more specific. I don't want to just try and get them done, but write them well. I can measure this by looking at the grade or comments that I got on the paper. My parents can help me with this by looking over my papers to make sure they are written well. This is reasonable because this is an English class where you write papers, and I should be able to write them enough. I would like to accomplish this by the second semester.

  46. My goal this english year is to really preform highly on any writing contest I enter. Although I have entered and placed in many, I've never been able to claim first, (except in school ones, in which i really don't think count all that much). To be able to do this i will need to be able to broaden my vocabulary, open myself up to new ideas and writing styles, and really get outside of my comfort zone of writing. To get there i will need Myself, for my own will power to do better than I had done before, Mrs. Devore, to open me up to the more 'tequnical' side of my writing, and anybody who has input. I do think this is possible because there is always room for improvement in what I do, and I believe I am not yet at my highest possible point of writing. I will know i have finally achieved this goal when I see I am doing better than what I have done before, when i've inspired and gaven hope to people, and when I really see a difference throughout the growth of time.

My second goal is to read more abstract books. Although I have already read many books that 'really make you think', I'd like to find and be able to some what understand these books. To know i've accomplished this goal, i'll basically have to compair it to what I had read earlier and think to myself "would i have understood this last year?" I want to be able to broaden my horizons of what I have and what I am open to reading. People who will be able to help me consist of anybody who has read more and different types of books than I have. I will need to be open to suggestion. I do think this will be possible, and I hope for this to be an on going goal, because I want my horizons to constantly grow with myself.

  47. One of my goals is to get an A in this class all year. I am going to try my best on every assignment and in class. I want to hand in the best quality work I can and get an A in this class while doing so. Another goal is to become better at writing. I am going to challenge myself in this class everyday to become better at writing. I am going to work hard in this class all year to accomplish my goals.

  48. My first goal for this English for my freshman year is to keep a steady grade of at least a B. I will have to work hard on all of my assignments and make sure that they get done on time. I will know that I have met my goal at the end of the year by looking back at each quarter grade and see wether or not I have kept my grade a B or better. I hope by doing this it will build my confidence because I don't like speaking in front of people. So, if I get good grades on all of my speeches I will also get a good over all grade.

My second goal is to become a better writer. I have some trouble writing because I don't describe the surroundings in my story which makes my writing very boring. If I learn to write and describe I will become a better writer. I will know that I have met my goal by checking my grade of the things that I have written. I will do this for my freshman year.

  49. My first and primary goal is to become a better speaker. Specifically, in front of a variety of groups, varying in size, opinions, and much more. I will know that I have accomplished this goal when I myself can feel comfortable when I am doing speeches and such. I will be able to recognize how many of the nervous symtoms, that I may normally experience, vanish. I hope to achieve this goal by the end of the first quarter, because I know that after 9 weeks with classmates and an instructor, I shall have enough support and criticism to improve within that short amount of time. I realize that not only should my peers and teacher be giving me that help, but I should also help myself to recognize the things that I am able to improve on, as well as the things I did well.

My second goal would be to read more frequently and also increase my vocabulary in size. By the end of the first quarter, I would like to have read at least 45 minutes a week and have completely familiarized myself with 10 new words per month. I will measure this by starting a book list, and also recorded the new words I learn with their definitions. I know that this class will help me attain this goal by respected the time we are given for reading, and Mrs.DeVore and my mother will help me understand words that I may be confused or unfamiliar with. This goal is definitely realistic because I know I can do it by the proof in my past with reading and vocabulary.
